FACE | Gift Ideas for Perfume Lovers

I was reading an article in Vogue this week, where Frédéric Malle, fragrance connoisseur and architect behind Editions de Parfums, shared excellent tips on choosing the right perfume as a gift. This particular gem jumped out at me and I think it's so true, not only when it comes to fragrance, but shopping in general!

“A lot of people give Chanel No. 5 for the same reason they might buy an Apple computer - because they think they can’t go wrong,” says Malle. “But perfume is more personal than that. It’s not about choosing a ‘good’ fragrance. It’s about choosing the one that’s a good match with the person who will be wearing it.”

I've always been a fan of wearing fragrance that stands out from the crowd and think a lot of us are starting to lean this way. We all want to be unique (oxymoron?!) and none of us want to smell like every other person in the room. If you're choosing a perfume for someone special in your life this Christmas, take the time to really think about what kind of scent truly suits their personality and individual style.

My edit features ten really special recent releases that are that little bit different, smell sensational and are absolutely not run of the mill. I defy you to resist popping one in the basket for yourself!

Van Cleef and Arpels Santal Blanc - with notes of fig milk and a delicate powdery musk, this leaves a trail of velvety, luxurious sandalwood.

VAN CLEEF& ARPELS_SANTAL BLANC.jpg

Acqua di Parma’s Signature Oud - simultaneously warm, familiar and mysterious with notes of bergamot and orange on Russian coriander and musk, combining to create a soft, woody fragrance.

Acqua-di-Parma-Oud-Eau-de-Parfum.jpg

Tocca Gia - an oriental floral with pink pepper, tangerine and Turkish rose on a base of amber, sandalwood and vanilla. Tocca fragrances are a recent discovery and really special.

4812724180022_030_b.jpg

Gucci Memoire d'une Odeur - floral and herby with woody undertones, this has top notes of chamomile and almond mixed with fresh florals. The gorgeous green glass bottle is an absolute gift in itself.

Gucci Memoire d'une Odeur Eau de Parfum.jpg

Gabrielle Chanel Essence - deep and voluptuous with jasmine, ylang-ylang, orange blossom and Grasse tuberose. Captivating.

Gabrielle Chanel Essence.png

Jo Malone London Poppy & Barley - this juicy, gentle floral encapsulates the scents of barley, blackcurrants and fresh poppies, with powdery white musk.

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley.jpg

Jimmy Choo Urban Hero - woody and aromatic with vibrant lemon caviar, rosewood and warm black pepper, this includes one of my favourite notes, sophisticated vetiver.

JIMMY CHOO_URBAN HERO.jpg

I always like to think outside the box for those who prefer a slightly softer take on fragrance, or like to save more heady scents for evening. Fragrant body cream, scented hair mist or even a gorgeous hand cream can be just enough for a subtle is she or isn't she effect. Here are a few great alternatives to more full on fragrances...

Tom Ford Ombre Leather Body Spray - warm, woody and sophisticated with cardamom, jasmine sambac and black leather on a base of amber, moss and patchouli. Also available as eau de parfum if you fancy a more intense hit!

Tom Ford Ombre Leather All Over Body Spray.jpg

Jo Loves Rose Petal Shimmer Paintbrush - ideal for on the go touch ups, this brush-on gel has top notes of rose de Mai and rose absolute, combined with the musky aroma of ambrette - well-balanced and highly wearable.

Annick Goutal Hand Cream - inspired by a walk in an English garden, this hand cream feels rich and velvety and smells exquisite.

Side note: lots of these work well for both men and women - particularly the Acqua di Parma, Tom Ford and Jimmy Choo - BUT every signature is unisex in my book, so make up your own rules and wear whatever makes you feel good!

FACE | New in Beauty

I've been prowling the beauty aisles, trialling a tonne of gorgeous new products and lined up the very best of them to share with you. Welcome to my edit of the Top 10 beauty launches I'm obsessing over - from skincare to get you glowing to a just-bitten lip stain and show stopping glitter eyes.

MAKE-UP

Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Liquid-Gel Eyeliner

Marc Jacobs Beauty has reinvented its renowned Highliner Gel Crayon as a liquid liner. Extremely pigmented and equally long lasting, Highliner Liquid-Gel Eyeliner comes in four permanent shades and three limited-edition ones in striking shades.

Victoria Beckham Beauty Bitten Lip Tint

Victoria Beckham is gradually adding to her sophisticated new beauty collection with more delectable treats, a clever way to reel us in! Your Perfect Pout Lip includes six neutral lip pencils and Bitten Lip Tint in one universal sheer, rosy tone to layer over the pencils or wear alone. Genius.

 FRAGRANCE

 Jo Malone Rose & Magnolia

Rose and Magnolia is the latest scent in the Jo Malone London family, a fresh and uplifting blend, beautifully packaged with a chic blue label. The brand has also launched a charity candle shining a light on mental health, in uplifting Lily of the Valley and Ivy. 75% of is cost (minus VAT) will be donated to ten charities supporting people with mental health issues and their families.

Zara Emotions by Jo Malone

If you fancy a treat for the senses without digging quite so deep, Jo Malone herself (of Jo Loves) has created an exclusive range for high street retailer, Zara. Zara Emotions is a collection of eight fragrances including Ebony Wood, Vetiver Pamplemousse and Fleur d'Oranger - and despite the accessible price range, there has been no compromise on quality.

My favourite is the same as Jo's - the heady Bohemian Bluebells, with lavender, sandalwood and musk - which she claims to be ‘unlike anything you’ve ever smelt before.’ The 10ml rollerballs are brilliantly priced at £5.99 and the perfect handbag size. Larger bottles come in at £15.99 for 40ml and £25.95 for 90ml. (The Belfast stand was looking a little sparse last week but you can purchase at Zara online.)

 HAIR

Moroccanoil Color Depositing Masks

Moroccanoil's argan oil-infused range is a godsend for hair that needs serious TLC - or any fan of super strong, glossy locks! It's new Colour Depositing Masks help maintain the quality of our hair colour and come in seven shades from Champagne to Bordeaux. This deep-conditioning treatment contains strengthening amino acids, hydrating apricot kernel oil and conditioning hydrolysed soy protein - as well as pure pigments.

FASHION | The Wonders of a Winter Day Dress

I'm a huge fan of dresses at any time of the year, but on a freezing cold Winter morning, you just can't beat the ease of slinging on a single garment before racing out the door. Essentially an entire outfit in one fell swoop, the joy of dresses means zero faff while hunting for things that match - oh and did I mention the comfort?

One of the things I love most about this season's dresses is the variety of gorgeously tactile fabrics they come in... soft wool, smooth satin, sumptuous velvet, cosy cord and sensual leather. They don't just look good; they feel good.

Usually in heavier fabrics, richer hues and longer hemlines than previous seasons, Winter dresses work for every occasion from hanging out with kids to the office or lunch with friends. Add a chunky cardigan or oversized blazer with boots or trainers for a casual look - or dress up with heeled boots and a long wool coat for smarter occasions. When it's proper freezing, add tights and layer over a thin top or roll neck.

While dark florals are on trend for Winter 2019/20 (Topshop and Rixo have some gems), there are so many styles to choose from. Wondering how to wear them? Here are my tips:

  • Any time, any place: loose tiered maxi (or mini) + Western boots or chunky trainers

  • Casual days: loose knit dress + chunky ankle boots

  • The office: shirt dress + heeled boots

  • Lunch with friends (that may drift into evening): relaxed fit (faux) leather

For a very special daytime occasion, check out these beauties by Roksanda Mina and Victoria Beckham. Fabulous as they are, I think Zara's red ruffled satin and embroidered tulle dresses create just as much impact.

FACE | SUSTAINABLE BEAUTY

From tiny independents to huge global brands, the beauty business is gradually becoming more sustainable, with an increasingly ethical approach to ingredients, packaging and production. While some take small steps and others giant strides to protect our planet, every improvement is a step in the right direction. The key thing is to start somewhere, from reducing or cutting plastic packaging, to recycling and going organic or GM-free. Here are some of the brands making the biggest impact.

Dr Hauschka

Dr Hauschka uses biodynamic farming methods to grow its ingredients and green electricity where possible. Most of its plant-based products are packaged in glass and aluminium jars and tubes.

Dr Hauschka Shower Cream £12

dr-hauschka-shower-cream-150-ml-1213434-en.jpg

Neal’s Yard

Neal’s Yard obtains ethical and environmentally friendly ingredient alternatives, supporting small distilleries and communities in Nepal, Serbia and Kenya.

Neal’s Yard Lavendar & Tea Tree Body Powder £10

Lush Shampoo Bar & Charity pot

Around 90% of Lush’s packaging is recycled and half of its products can be taken home without any packaging, including this cute shampoo bar. Result.

With each sale of a Charity Pot, Lush donates 100% of the price (minus the taxes) to grassroots organisations working on environmental conservation, animal welfare and human rights.

Hydro Phil Cotton Buds, £2.50 for 100

The UK uses 13.2 billion plastic cotton buds a year, more than any other European country. Hydro Phil biodegradable bamboo and cotton swabs come in a recycled box and are compostable when you're done.

Fushcia Vegan Wooden Brush Set, 35 euro

Irish brand, Fuschia Beauty's new 8-piece Vegan Wooden Brush Collection includes 3 eye and 5 face brushes to buff, blend and contour, with beautiful bamboo handles.

Soaper Duper

The packaging of these gorgeous sulphate-free shower and hand products are made from 50% PCR plastic and its tubes 55%. It has recycled over 22 metric tonnes of plastic and donated £150,000 to WaterAid.

The Kind Co

Irish company, The Kind Co curates a wonderful selection of products that are kind to the user and kind to the environment. These guys are a one-stop shop to purchase all you need to reduce plastic and find unique products that enable you to live more consciously with zero waste.

Weleda Skin Food

I first discovered Weleda through its camomile-based, skin-kind baby products. More than 75% of its plant ingredients come from biodynamic or organic farming and its commitment to biodiversity has been recognised by the Union for Ethical BioTrade.

 Sheamoisture
SheaMoisture is economically empowering cooperatives in countries such as Ghana, Jamaica and Turkey where its ingredients are grown.
African Black Soap Soothing Body Wash £12

The HandMade Soap Company

We totally love this Irish company’s hand creams, soaps and scrubs – our ultimate hand spa would include some sugar-based hand scrub, followed by some cuticle oil and topped off with some of their award-winning hand cream; all from the Bergamot and Eucalyptus collection.
Their home collection is also pretty special - we especially love their lemongrass and cedarwood reed diffuser.

And the best bit is - all this company’s bottles, including hotel minis, are made from post-consumer recycled plastic – and everything is 100% recyclable too! This is a hugely important step in reducing plastic manufacturing, single-use plastic and closing the loop of recycling. All products are free from SLS, paragons and petrochemicals; plus they never test on animals.

And with naturally occurring glycerine locked inside the bars, it is super moisturising, putting a stop to all the elements that have given soap a bad rap.

The SENSITIVE FACIAL BAR is our fave and has a blend of Chamomile & Calendula essential oils, for ultra-nourishing cleansing which is gentle enough to use on sensitive skin.

Spotlight Oral Care
Spotlight Oral Care launched its latest range of effective and sustainable dental products which are toxin-free, environmentally friendly and cruelty-free.
The new range features 5 products which all contain clinically proven ingredients each tackling common dental concerns. With billions of toothpaste tubes sitting in landfill sites each year we are excited with their latest offering - even the packaging is made from sugar cane and is 100% recyclable - a game changer for a plastic-heavy industry.

REFILLABLE BEAUTY

According to a report from Mintel, ‘zero waste’ is set to be the key beauty trend in the coming years: 'Whether reducing or eliminating waste altogether, if brands don’t change their approach now they will become insignificant and may not exist in the future.’  Here is a round up of the best refillables on my radar... please share yours too @thefwordsonline

Chantecaille Pebble Compact

This extremely environmentally conscious brand uses high concentrations of botanicals and has a longterm focus on ocean health. The Pebble Compact houses its eye and cheek creams. £9.50, plus product around £19.50.

Lancome Idole

Lancome's new blockbuster perfume, wasn't just created by three female noses, smells of bergamot, rose & jasmine and comes in a chic super slim bottle. It's also refillable - on counter. It's not the first perfume brand to do so but I'm hoping lots more follow suit. Mugler offers the same for its Angel, Alien and Aura fragrances, one of which is refilled somewhere in the world every 25 seconds. Lancome Idole from £48 (refills from £38.50)

L'Occitane Almond Shower Duo

L'Occitane offers refills for many of its products including bath, shower and hand washes. My personal favourite is the Almond Shower Oil which smells incredible and leaves skin deeply nourished. £39 (worth £47.50)

Rachel Vosper

Based in London’s Belgravia, this store not only refills both its own candle vessels or a container of your choice with fragranced wax and bespoke scents. Available in-store and by post from £24.

Andrea Garland Lip Balm Compacts

Customers love refilling these natural lip balms in retro-inspired compacts or vintage pots. From £15, refill charge is £3.50

Kjaer Weis blush

These metal cases with swivel tops can all be refilled with lip, cheek or eye products made from organic ingredients. £41, refill £24,

Tropic Bath Foam

Not only does this smell divine, its refillable pouch can replenish the original bottle twice over. £18, refill £27

Rituals Body Cream

Rituals reminds us that using a refill of its luxurious body creams saves 70 per cent in CO2 emissions and uses 65 per cent less energy and 45 per cent less water. £18.50, refill £15.50

Dior Prestige La Crème Texture Riche £285
In order to better safeguard the environment, Dior offers refillable bottles and jars within its Capture Totale, Dior Prestige and L’Or de Vie ranges.

Another brand committed to limiting their impact on the environment is L’Occitane, who have cut down on excessive holiday packaging. In a bid to minimise the amount of packaging materials, the company reduced its use of cardboard by over 31,000 kilograms in this year’s Christmas range!

The brand has never used plastic bags preferring paper bags instead and this year they have also ensured all its wrapping paper is made from recycled and recyclable materials.

FACE | AUTUMN-WINTER BEAUTY FIXES

I like to step up my skincare regime at this time of year when the shift between a centrally heated office or cosy fireside and the crisp outdoors can really take its toll on delicate skin, causing dryness, dehydration or irritation. Regular readers know by now that I’m a fan of hydration from within first and foremost – so firstly, top up on your H2O, and drink plenty of veggie-heavy winter soups to keep the nutrients coming in. As well as this, gently nourishing oils and creams can make a marked difference in days... add a couple of these beauty fixes to your AW regime and your hair and skin will thank you later.

PARCHED CHEEKS

My cold weather skincare regime is a little more luxe than usual, with the addition of rich cleansing balms, treatment serums and hydrating masks. A luxurious face oil can make a real difference and I like to apply Sunday Riley's Juno Antioxidant + Superfood Face Oil before bed at night. This glow-giver is high in omegas 3,6&9, essential amino acids and natural anti-inflammatory agents, which leave skin feeling velvety soft and luminous; not a dry patch in sight.

If you prefer a gel texture, try Image Vital C Hydrating Overnight Mask for a boost of hydration as you sleep. A triple mineral complex and blue green algae extract smooth and energise skin... nothing beats waking up looking extra energised and glowy! Add a green juice for breakfast for inside-out hydration and you're good to go!

Image Vital C Hydrating Overnight Mask.jpg

If you’re always on the go then Charlotte Tilbury Magic Night Cream is instant beauty sleep in a cream elixir! The supercharged formula feeds your skin and smooths its appearance hour by hour as you sleep, with a powerhouse of 8 magic ingredients, for gorgeous looking skin!

ct.png

I have recently added Tropic’s Supergreens facial oil to my skin routine. It is packed with vitamins and nutrients that help fight the effects of everyday pollution and leaved skin looking bright and healthy - it is also great if you have irritated or sensitive skin

DRY, CRISPY LOCKS

If central heating and icy winds leave your locks feeling stripped and crunchy, a weekly mask helps restore hair health. No need to wait around for hours or ruin pillows with an overnighter; Label M's Honey & Oat Mask works in just 3 minutes. Royal Black Honey, Oat Oil, antioxidants and protein protect from damage and hydrate where needed for soft, swishy hair. Restrict to mid lengths and ends as this is super rich and I find once a month is all my hair needs. PS the honey scent is swoony.

CROCODILE SHINS

We've all been there and know the drill. Scaly shins ain't sexy and should be slathered with a sumptuous rich body cream nightly to restore silky smoothness. Weekly exfoliation helps slough off any dead skin cells so that cream can really sink in and get to work. I am not a big fan of harsh exfoliators so I love the Yonka sugar scrubs which are gentle to the skin. They feel luxurious and melt into a milky texture when you add water, leaving skin feeling super soft.

If you're anything like me, a divinely scented product will help encourage you to do this on repeat (it really only takes a minute!). I'm a fan of  L'Occitane Milk Concentrate with Almond Milk and The Body Shop Body Butters are fantastic. NB these two body care steps are essential if you're an all year round self tanner.

Dry brushing is important and wonderful for exfoliating dry winter skin, leaving skin looking polished and fresh. It also helps detoxify by increasing blood circulation and promoting lymph flow and drainage so try and add this into your skin routine.

The Body Shop do a great range and are made with a wooden handle making them much better for the environment. They also have one with a small handle making it easy to use.

FASHION | The Day Bag Ed

What each of us look for in a day bag varies enormously depending on our lifestyle - and if you're anything like me, which day of the week it is! In this edit I've included five of the biggest day bag trends for 2019, in a mix of styles that should allow everyone to tick at least one box.

From belt bags for hands-free fans - mums, dog walkers et al - to large roomy totes for those of us who like to lug a laptop, spare shoes and full day's worth of snacks around with us. And probably a makeup bag. And several kids' toys, just in case. You get the picture...

As budgets also vary as widely as our needs, I've included both designer and budget alternatives of each style. NB these aren't really intended to be dupes - just similar, more affordable options.

 1. THE SHEARLING

Fendi: £3950

M&S: £10

It started with teddy coats and shearling boots - and now handbags are following suit. Cosy up and add a touch of softness to your day with strokable shearling, faux fur and snuggly textiles spotted everywhere from Chanel to Dries Van Noten. There are tonnes to choose from on the High Street... M&S also has a more roomy version in ginger for £25.

 2. THE LARGE TOTE

Tom Ford: £1390

Next: £72

These need no explanation as no-one can argue with the virtues of a roomy tote. As well as being endlessly useful on a working day, I love to chuck my phone and purse into one when I'm going clothes shopping. Any opportunity to say no to plastic bags - plus it looks and feels so much better! The Tom Ford is to die for, but I really think this leather Next version looks way more expensive than its price tag.

 3. THE LUXE CROC EFFECT

Chloe Aby: £1959

Carvela Croc effect, -ú79.jpg

Carvela: £79

Elevate any look with croc accessories (I prefer faux) to add instant polish. Check out 2019's version of Chloe's first ever cult bag, the Paddington, once spotted on the arm of every supermodel and It girl... and instantly recognisable with its logo padlock. Who remembers how heavy these were?! The Aby is more chic, structured and the perfect medium sized bag. Kurt Geiger's Carvela alternative is also super stylish.

 4. THE BAGUETTE

Fendi: £1959

Zara: £29.99

Another throwback - this time from the 90s - heralded by the return of the swoony Fendi baguette. Ideal for the minimalist among you who carry only a purse, phone and lipstick in their bag (hands free shopping anyone?). Looks just as good tucked under the arm of a cosy knit as it does evening wear. I'm happy to say that this style is widely available on the High Street, with Zara and ASOS turning up some excellent designs. The Fendi is available in a rainbow of colours, including the original logo print and striking gold metallic.

 5. THE BELT BAG

Gucci: £795

Boohoo: £14

For an even more pared back effect, go completely hands free with a belt bag. AKA bum bag, waist bag, fanny pack... I'll stick with belt bag thanks! A forever favourite with dads and globetrotters, Prada has taken this trend to another level - and everyone is following suit. Pair with jeans and a chunky knit for running errands that require both hands; use to cinch in your waist for a more fitted silhouette or wear cross body at chest level if you're uber cool (and less well endowed than me).

Multibagging (wearing two or more bags at once) is also a thing now, so if the challenge of choosing gets too much, you're sorted!

FASHION | COOL KICKS

Remember when we thought it was radical to switch heels for trainers on the daily commute? Today a dress/suit/ball gown + trainers = standard... and I love that. Been doing it for years (and I have to say, been teased for it too, before the same people started doing it to…)

Anyhoo, with fabulous sneakers spotted at Louboutin, Valentino and Chloe - trust me - this street style is sticking around! And if you want to get in on the action, it's totally possible to make your off-duty look a fashion statement with my round up of the best kicks of the season.

So is it really possible to combine comfort and cool? Absolutely! Choose from sporty, street style or statement - and pair with whatever the hell you like. Mixing fashion and function is always a winner, so athleisure is a staple look for me... hectic days require comfort and I often sport gym gear or gorgeous leggings (anyone else tried and loved the SPANX leather look ones yet?!) plus sneakers while on the go. I also love pairing trainers with dresses and tailored trousers for an effortlessly stylish vibe and a welcome change from my business heels.

So what's everyone wearing on the streets of Belfast and beyond?! Local fashionistas can be seen in Golden Goose, Veja and Vans, while those not afraid to step up the style stakes don something a little more out there, with in-your-face chunky platform styles.

If you don't fancy forking out £650 for Balenciaga's version, check out Topshop Cancun at a more palatable £32. If only opting for one pair, white or neutral will work hard with everything in your wardrobe...try Reebox x Victoria Beckham (£190), Next or M&S.

Love them or loathe them, the trainer trend is here to stay - from designer luxe to sportswear - don't knock it til you try it!

Regular followers of the blog or my IG stories will know that I try and treat myself to fortnightly manicures at my local salon Sistine Beauty, to keep my nails strong and healthy, but sometimes life gets in the way and I have to make do with a quick home manicure.

So, I am very excited to see that Note Cosmetics (one of my fave brands) has created a brand new Gel Look nail polish range making it easy to achieve a salon-esque finish, without having to actually visit the salon!
