Until the middle of the twentieth century, there was no agreed-upon standard by which diamonds could be judged. The first - now globally accepted standard for describing diamonds - is colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. Today, the 4Cs of diamond quality is the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond, anywhere in the world.

COLOUR: The colour evaluation of most gem-quality diamonds is actually based on the absence of colour. A chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond has no hue, like a drop of pure water, and consequently, a higher value. Many colour distinctions are so subtle that they are invisible to the untrained eye, but make a very big difference in diamond quality and price.

CLARITY: Natural diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in the earth. This process can result in a variety of characteristics called 'inclusions' and external characteristics called 'blemishes.' Evaluating diamond clarity involves determining the number, size, relief, nature and position of these characteristics - and how they affect the overall appearance of the stone. While no diamond is perfectly pure, the closer it comes, the higher its value.

CARAT: Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weighs; a metric 'carat' is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat can be subdivided into 100 'points', allowing very precise measurements to the hundredth decimal place. While diamond price generally increases with carat weight, two diamonds of equal carat weight can have very different values  depending on their clarity, colour, and cut.

CUT: We often think of a diamond's cut as shape (round, emerald, pear), but its cut grade is really about how well a diamond's facets interact with light. Precise artistry and workmanship are required to fashion a stone so that its proportions, symmetry and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond. The quality of cut is crucial to the diamond's final beauty and value - and is the most complex and technically difficult element to analyse.

FASHION | NAIL ALERT!

Nails certainly ruled the AW19 catwalks where extra bold was flavour of the season. Think French mani but with a modern revival, glitter overload with added bling (especially pearls) and lots of spiced neutrals (think of the colour of spices from your cupboard – paprika, cinnamon etc) which make your standard neutrals a whole lot bolder.

I've (metaphorically, more's the pity) combed some of the world's best beaches to  inspo from five of the most fabulous destinations for 2020, whether you prefer to explore city streets, be at one with nature or chillax in complete decadence.

Croatia

Island-hopping is the best way to explore the ancient walled cities and stunning beaches of Croatia. Head south from atmospheric Split to Dubrovnik, with its movie-star good looks... travel by road and boat rides, taking in the medieval town of Korcula and the national park of Mjlet, for hiking with the scent of wild herbs in the air.

Trust me, you haven't seen truly crystal clear waters until you've visited this part of the world, with a mix of idyllic quiet havens and night life to suit every discerning holiday maker.

Slovenia

An earthly paradise of snow-capped peaks, turquoise-green rivers and Venetian-style coastline, Slovenia's natural treasures are enriched with harmonious architecture, charming rustic culture and sophisticated cuisine.

Its capital, leafy Ljubljana, is a young and lively city that should be on everyone’s radar... sail the Ljubljanica River on a traditional wooden boat to experience the city and breathtaking views. In summer, drink in the atmosphere and enjoy people-watching in cafes dotted along the river.

Greek Islands

There are hundreds of Greek islands to explore whether you're looking for sandy beaches, unspoilt landscape or history and culture. The Ionians can't be beaten for golden beaches with dramatic coastlines and Shipwreck Bay on Zakynthos, only accessible by boat, is a little bit of paradise.

Quieter than beautiful Santorini, Paros has a wonderful mix of the great beaches and villages of Naxos and the nightlife and boutique vibe of Mykonos. The largest of them all, Crete remains rich with beaches, historical sights, hikes, and small cities.

The Turkish Riviera

The Turquoise Coast is a chic option for those who want to swim, sail, eat and party. From secret beach spots such as Datçaand Bozburun to the Bodrum Peninsula and superyacht-filled Yalikavak Marina. Kaplankaya, an entire new coastal town north-west of Bodrum, is well worth a visit. If you prefer somewhere more peaceful, opt for Amanruya, while camping is becoming a family favourite on the Aegean Coast. For history lovers, the cities and traditional towns along the coast are packed with ancient sites, including the city ruins of PHaselis, Myra and the Temple of Apollo.  I’m also popping Cappodoccia onto my travel wishlist again this year. It is a must-see wonder of the world, and I might even do it by balloon if I can!

The Caribbean

You’ll be hard pressed to find Caribbean beaches more spectacular than the beautiful Anguilla. From long stretches of pristine white sand on Rendezvous Bay to the sparkling Maundays Bay, Anguilla is a honeymoon hot spot, also popular with families. With its gorgeous coastlines, lush interiors and volcanic peaks, the Caribbean is now popular for hiking too, with some great spots in Antigua and Montserrat.

All topped off by sipping rum punch in and nibbling beach BBQ tapas with cool calypso tunes under the stars...

FARAWAY PLACES | TRAVEL IN STYLE - THE LUGGAGE EDIT

Gone are the days of dragging a dusty, battered old suitcase down from the attic and filling it with your favourite outfits. No longer a purely practical necessity, luggage has become an extension of our personal style... it's got to look good and work hard for you.  

My tick list includes:

• roomy but a manageable size (I've got to lug it everywhere after all)

• sturdy and well made to pass the test of time

• lightweight and easy to maneouvre (wheels non-optional!)

• easy to spot on the conveyor belt

• and of course, stylish!

Great luggage doesn't come cheap and isn't an investment to be taken lightly, so take the time to consider what you really need.

Any pro traveller knows that the golden rule is to travel with hand luggage only - if you can. Not an option for longer than a weekend in my experience, and definitely not in Winter when we need ALL THE LAYERS, but then I'm not one to travel light - and outfit options are a necessity, right?!

Unless your bag is being put in the overhead locker, steer clear of soft cases to avoid damage to your possessions inside. Either way, ask to have your luggage marked as fragile and it will be one of the first to come off of the plane.

Your suitcase is still likely to get chucked about a fair bit on its journey, so choose a case with separate compartments... no-one wants their outfits to smell of Duty Free gin on a weekend away.

FURNISH | Smells Like Autumn

One of my favourite things about darker Autumn evenings is the pleasure of closing the shutters (I live in an old house) and lighting a few candles once I have Valentina in bed. Even if I’m working it helps to lift the mood by setting a natural light gauge very much in the chill zone. And now that the clocks have gone back, it’s the perfect time to share some of my favourite candles that make my home look and smell warm and welcoming this Autumn.

Quite a few of my picks are pretty spendy tbh, but I've discovered through trial and error that the best scented candles are worth every penny. My trick is to light them for an hour or two, then distinguish and leave plain candles burning into the wee small hours. A quality candle will fill the room with scent in this time and often linger into the next day, plus the good ones burn up to 50 hours... that's a whole lotta feel-goodness! If you’re conscious about smoke, then most of these guys offer oil diffusers too, which are perfect for lingering, subtle scents.

Throwback 90s hair accessories are having a revival moment and I'm all over it. Girlish headbands and hair clips have had a grown-up makeover and add instant edge to an outfit, without looking too try-hard.

FILM | IRISH TALENT NAMED IN BAFTA’S BREAKTHROUGH BRITS OF 2019

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced the 2019’s BAFTA Breakthrough Brits, in partnership with Netflix. Twenty of the UK’s most promising future stars of film, games and television have been revealed and among them is Irish actor Niamh Algar.

Niamh, 29, grew up in County Westmeath in Ireland and now lives in South London. As a child, Niamh loved using her creative eye to entertain her family with short films she would make on her mum’s old VHS camera so a career in the arts seemed inevitable. Like so many people, it was through sleepovers with friends at an early age that Niamh discovered a world of heavy, female-centric dramas which had a profound impact on her, such as Woman Under the Influence , Girl Interrupted and Monster .

She landed her first leading role in the Independent feature film Without Name which was particularly exciting as she was a fan of director Lorcan Finnegan’s previous work. In fact, Niamh has been lucky enough to have already worked with many of her directing heroes, including Shane Meadows on The Virtues and now Ridley Scott, who has cast her in his sci-fi fantasy, Raised by Wolves , which has pushed Niamh like never before.

BAFTA Breakthrough is BAFTA’s flagship new talent scheme that showcases and supports the next generation of creative talent in film, games and television in the UK.
Honourees receive one-to-one mentoring and career guidance, as well as access to BAFTA events and networking opportunities in the UK and internationally – something Niamh is extremely thankful for.

FITNESS | Ten Benefits Of Using Apple Cider Vinegar + How To Add It To Your Diet

Regular followers of my social channels will know that I am a massive advocate of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV); and although my love of this super acidic plonk is recent, it is an ingredient that has been used medicinally and therapeutically for centuries. In fact, the ancient Greeks would recommend a mixture of vinegar and honey to patients to treat a cough. I recently gargled ACV on swollen tonsils and a phlegm-y throat, only to have it disappear the next morning, so I know first hand that they were right! It was also traditionally used for wound healing, cleaning and sanitizing, as well as food preservation.

ACV is made from apple juice and is fermented to hard apple cider. It's then fermented a second time to become apple cider vinegar. In large volumes, it is known to contain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, organic acids (acetic acid and citric acid), and polyphenolic compounds (micronutrients known for their role in preventing disease).

It's effective for pretty much anything—your skin, hair, house, and even your pets can benefit from a little raw, organic, unfiltered, and unpasteurised apple cider vinegar. I consulted my fave online journal for all things health – www.mindbodygreen.com and found a list of their favourite ways to use ACV and why:

1. It's good for your gut.

The fermentation process that yields apple cider vinegar encourages the growth and proliferation of good-for-your-gut microbes. Consuming probiotic-rich fermented foods has been shown to improve digestion, boost the immune system, and even positively affect mental health. Most of the probiotics in apple cider vinegar are in the cloudy "mother" strands you'll find floating in it, so be sure to purchase ACV that still has the mother intact.

Beyond being full of probiotics, ACV's many other properties are beneficial for gut health. As functional medicine practitioner Will Cole, D.C., IFMCP, explains, "ACV has also been shown to have antiviral and anti-yeast and antifungal benefits, all helpful in supporting microbiome and overall immune balance."

2. It may help control blood sugar.

ACV may help combat that spike-then-crash blood sugar roller coaster you can feel after a carb-heavy meal. In one small study, supplementing a high glycemic meal (think a bagel and juice) with ACV reduced post-meal blood sugar levels by about half in healthy patients. In a similar study by the same authors, participants with diabetes or insulin resistance saw blood-sugar-balancing benefits from ACV as well.

So before digging into your starchy faves like pasta, potatoes, and pretzels, try sipping on a little ACV.

3. It can aid in weight loss.

Probably one of the most well-known of ACV's benefits is its role in weight loss. While there have not been many studies directly on ACV and weight maintenance, there have been studies on its components, like acetic acid. In a study of obese Japanese adults, it was found that subjects who consumed acetic acid for 12 weeks experienced significant weight loss and declines in abdominal fat, waist circumference, and triglycerides compared to those who consumed a placebo.

Researchers believe it works by suppressing appetite. Acetic acid has been shown to delay gastric emptying, meaning you feel fuller for longer. This is probably why ACV consumption has also been weakly associated with lower total energy consumption throughout the day.

While further research is needed, you can safely include ACV as part of a nourishing weight management routine. Try adding 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to 16 ounces of water and sipping this concoction throughout the day.

4. It's a DIY nontoxic cleaner.

ACV has antibacterial properties, so you can use it to clean everything from your kitchen counter to the bathtub. Just mix ½ cup ACV with 1 cup water, and get cleaning. Use this solution to clean microwaves, kitchen surfaces, windows, glasses, and mirrors. It can also be used in dishwashers as a substitute for dish detergent.

ACV will even clean your toilets and leave your bathroom smelling like apples. Just pour it into the toilet and allow it to sit overnight.

By using ACV in lieu of other products, you can decrease the use of harsh chemicals in your home and daily life.

5. You can use it to wash produce.

Even if your produce is organic, there can still be pesticides on it. ACV is a great way to wash those off and eliminate any germs from your fresh fruits and veggies. Research has shown that ACV reduces the number of Salmonella bacteria on fresh salad vegetables. To boost the bacteria-fighting powers, mix in lemon juice, as this combination was found to be especially effective.

6. It can make your hair shine.

Normal shampoo is alkaline, which can throw off your hair's pH, causing brittle, dry strands. ACV's acidity makes it the perfect post-shampoo rinse to help restore pH balance, boosting hair body and shine.

Try recycling an old shampoo bottle, then filling it with ½ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of cold water. Pour the solution through your hair after shampooing.

Added bonus: ACV may help get rid of flaky dandruff. Due to its antifungal properties, it can work against some of the common causes of dandruff, like a buildup of oil or a yeastlike fungus called malassezia.

7. It can act as a skin toner.

The acidity and anti-inflammatory nature of ACV make it a great addition to your skin care routine. Dilute it with two parts water, and spread the concoction over your face with a cotton ball to replace your current toner. You can do this at night after washing and in the morning before you apply your moisturizer. The acidity helps slough away dead skin cells while soothing irritation.

It is important to note that due to its acidic nature, apple cider vinegar alone may cause skin irritation. Always dilute ACV before using topically.

8. It can remove stains from teeth.

Try mixing two parts ACV and one part baking soda for a natural tooth-whitening paste. Rub teeth directly with the apple cider vinegar paste, and rinse with water. The results won't be immediate, but done a few times a week, this should help to remove stains and whiten teeth. You can also gargle with ACV for a similar effect. Added bonus: Gargling ACV will relieve bad breath. Its antibacterial properties can kill stinky breath bacteria.

It's worth noting that, due to its acidity, there is some concern that consuming ACV can contribute to tooth enamel decay, just as soda and fruit juices do. So we advise caution with this method and don't recommend doing it long term.

9. It can repel fleas from your pets.

While ACV won't necessarily rid your pet of a flea problem, it can help prevent one. Fleas apparently do not like the smell or taste of vinegar, so ACV can be a good natural repellent.

Try spraying one part vinegar and one part water on your pet's fur and rubbing it in generously. Saturate the entire coat, and continue every day for a few days to a week

What exactly is "the mother" in ACV?

When ACV is made using a slow fermentation process, there is a buildup of yeast and bacteria. This buildup, called the mother, is commonly thought to contain most of the beneficial ingredients (enzymes and proteins). The mother makes it look slightly cloudy and may even show up in strands or sediment in the finished product.

When buying, you always want to purchase one with the mother still intact, as that is the part of the vinegar that retains many of the beneficial ingredients. Make sure you shake it well to disperse the mother before you use it.

How to add ACV to your diet.

Salad dressing

Elevate your salad by substituting your usual balsamic for ACV. Just mix it with healthy oils, herbs, and spices. This is a great way to sneak in some extra health benefits. You can also buy premade dressings that use ACV as one of the main ingredients.

Probiotic tonic

Try creating your own tonic by mixing ACV with fruit and something sweet. Let it sit for a few days in the fridge. Pop in a few fresh berries for added color and flavor for a fun probiotic drink!

Marinade

Another creative way to incorporate ACV into your diet is to use it as a tenderizer when you are cooking meat or poultry. Mix it with herbs and spices to create your own marinade recipe.

Cocktails

Having a party? Try adding ACV to your spiked cider or bloody mary mix recipes.

Still not sure about the taste? You can also get ACV in capsule form and take it that way. Warning: The capsules will still smell like apple cider vinegar.

Is ACV safe?

It's time to have the talk. The ACV safety talk. In general, consuming it in small amounts is considered safe. However, many doctors suggest that you don't consume more than 8 ounces per day because it has been linked to low potassium levels, which can cause muscle cramps or weakness and if it gets extreme can be dangerous. Also, if you have diabetes, talk to your doctor because it can lower blood glucose levels. If you have any type of chronic health condition, it is wise to consult your doctor before deciding to supplement with it. It is also recommended that you don't drink it straight as it is very acidic and can therefore harm your esophagus and possibly contribute to tooth decay. (It also tastes pretty terrible that way, TBH.)

FOLIO | Major new production takes a fresh look at The Playboy of the Western World

Written by JM Synge, the iconic ‘The Playboy of the Western World’ has been given a modern twist by director Oonagh Murphy, who casts a fresh look over this production, opening it up to a whole new generation.

 A play about life on the margins, the heart of this story transcribes the lengths we go to to create a reality more exciting than the place we find ourselves, in this instance it is one of feigned heroism and violence.

Extremely relevant when it first opened to great controversy in 1907, you can’t help but think of today’s society, where people are in a constant state of competition to showcase their own perfect (albeit not always real) life.

 Eloïse Stevenson is fantastic in her role as Pegeen, a fed up 20-something year old who is desperate to escape the confines of a life stuck in the middle of nowhere.
The arrival of stranger Christy Mahon (a great performance by Michael Shea) to her father’s shebeen, armed with tales that gets the whole village talking, ensures he is welcomed with great admiration by the locals, including Pegeen.

However, as is often the case, all is not as it seems and soon the playboy’s past threatens to catch up with him. Probably important to note that perhaps this is where the play’s new age doesn’t quite work as you can’t help but think that in the modern era, the outcome would be much easier. However, for the most part of the play, it does work - very well in fact.

 Murphy has made this play much sexier. The local girls, who are never too far from the new arrival, are played superbly; and I must give a special mention to the drunk scenes which were absolutely-freaking-hilarious!

 The set was also incredible. Molly O’Cathain excelled in her ability to bring the play to life through her design.  The introduction of Pegeen’s bedroom alongside the bar (the first time this has been incorporated into the play) added a brand new dimension, allowing us to glimpse different scenarios happening at the one time.

The Irish twang as well as the characters speaking in poetry (with lot of swearing) means visitors to our wee country might struggle to comprehend the dialect and at times even I found it quite difficult to understand, but the lines were incredible and kept the audience thoroughly entertained throughout – and the actors, who were so convincing in their roles, gave a brilliant performance delivering them.

 The play addresses the problem of Irish identification to great success. As would be expected with an Irish play, comic value (often inappropriate) runs throughout. Expect to laugh-out-loud in an almost “I should-not-be-laughing” kind of way.

 Emotional (tick), Funny (tick), sad (tick), bleak (tick) - ‘The Playboy of the Western World’ had all of the elements of a great play, including a shocking ending!

FASHION | Disco Pants

Even on Mondays, I'm partial to a touch of subtle sparkle (a diamond ring should cover it)... but at the weekend, I come over all Studio 54, ready to embrace spectacular shimmer from head-to-toe! If you fancy joining me, set aside that reliable little black dress and pull on your disco pants - it's time to turn every head in the room with this season's ultimate party attire: the sequinned trouser suit.

Easier to wear than you might think, wide legged pants and a loose fitting jacket give an air of relaxed glamour and are a personal favourite... I love how the sparkles catch the light as the fabric moves with my body. (Don't even think about avoiding the dance floor in an outfit like this!) Sequins as daywear are also de rigueur and, as ever, I'm all for maximising the price per wear. Pair sequinned trousers with chunky trainers, a loose knit and biker, or throw a glittering jacket over distressed faded jeans and cowboy boots.

As the first of the Autumn leaves begin to fall, it's time to prepare for cooler days ahead. FOOD | Deane’s EIPIC

Tucked away on Howard Street, Deanes EIPIC is the creation of renowned chef Michael Deane who, along with Paul Rankin and later Niall McKenna, revolutionised the eating out scene in Belfast in the 1990s and noughties. I have known and watched Michael Deane for years and have always admired his chutzpah and talent (evident by the fact that he is – I think - the only chef in Ireland to have held a Michelin star for 13 years) – firmly placing little old Belfast on the culinary map.

Unlike its more casual counterparts, Deane’s EIPIC is reminiscent of traditional grandeur, with its charcoal walls, slate floor and linen-clad tables, albeit with a modern twist in the form of sparkly accessories and white leather upholstery.
It is the place you go to when you want something a little bit fancier than normal. Service is always top notch (although I know the regular check-ups  and table-sweeping can be a little off-putting for those who may prefer a more casual eating place) but the staff really know their stuff and are never over formal, nor too informal (which I personally find worse, with all its intrusiveness).

If your table isn’t quite ready or if you have some time to kill before the meal, then I recommend sitting at the Champagne bar. It’s the perfect place to people watch comfortably, or enjoy the company of your date if you have one.

Without a doubt the focal point in the room is the glass wine pillar - smack, bang in the middle of the restaurant and which sommelier Didier Nyeceront has filled with one of the finest wine collections to be found in Belfast.

EIPIC (pronounced epic) derives from the word EPICUREAN which means;
“A person devoted to sensual enjoyment, especially that derived from fine food & drink” – a very fitting name, in my experience.

Each plate is carefully chosen and created using predominately local produce of only the finest quality (no surprise there).

Don’t expect to be hit with any over-whelming, punchy notes here. Instead, they know what works and as a result, with each mouthful, you are treated to a subtle marriage of flavours, paired together so beautifully you can see why they stick with what they know.

Example courses include; rainbow trout served with dashi, ponzu, beetroot, sesame, pork and whiskey; BBQ quail leg ravioli, carrot, rice, endive and mustard seed; wild bass, apple, cucumber, mushroom, sea herbs, herring roe (a personal favourite)  – delicate flavours perfectly balanced – you get the drift.

Meat is supplied by restaurant-favourite - Peter Hannan – and cooked exceptionally well as you’d expect.
Glenarm shorthorn with autumn vegetables, tarragon, foie gras and brown butter simply melts in the mouth and is guaranteed to please even the fussiest of diners.

I don’t say that lightly!

The seasonal aspect means the menu changes regularly, although you can be sure that the standard never changes with each plate consistently beautifully crafted. These chefs know what they are doing – and they don’t get it wrong.

The restaurant is open Wednesday-Saturday for dinner as well as Friday lunchtime and the set menu ranges from £30-£70. Wine pairing is a must if you like a tipple. The Sommelier selections are equally as impeccable as the food.

FOOD | THE GREAT ROOM RESTAURANT AT THE MERCHANT HOTEL, BELFAST

Any first-time visitor, to Belfast, could be forgiven for assuming The Merchant Hotel has stood, undaunted in all its Italianate splendour, as an ever-present icon through good times and bad; something akin to London’s Savoy, Claridge’s or The Ritz. In some respects, that’s true, insofar as the building actually pre-dates all those illustrious establishments.

However, its latest incarnation – as a hotel – didn’t materialise until 2006, being substantially extended and refurbished as late as 2010. Until then, it had been the headquarters of the Ulster Bank; but its 19th century heritage was faithfully retained, in all its glory (and maybe better than it was originally, in my opinion!)

The Great Room Restaurant, home to Ireland's largest crystal chandelier designed by Marcus Notley, only serves to reinforce the glamour; and optimises the popular perception of fine dining. I have eaten here many times for breakfast, lunch and dinner and absolutely adore the grandeur of it, the theatre of the food and the romance of the little velvet booths and banquettes.

But for now, let’s talk about taste…

The Great Room menus are built on the finest seasonal ingredients available, combined with fresh and innovative interpretations of classic dishes. The service is traditional, quite formal and respectful for newbies, as you’d expect and in-keeping with the ambiance. Slightly more familiar, but never intrusive for regulars.  In short, if you’re looking for an evening of formality, with excellently presented food served in Victorian splendour – I don’t know how else to phrase it – The Merchant’s Great Room is the place to go. You get pretty much exactly as you’d expect.

What may come as a surprise is that it manages to remain good value for money, considering all the above. OK, there are no Michelin stars to boast about, but the food is excellent; and at £60 per head, for a six-course tasting menu, with wine (£45 without), strikes me as very reasonable. The nine-course offering, at £95 with wine or £70 without, is similarly reasonable, given the elegant setting.

With a three-course set menu offered for less than £30, and a plethora of other choices (including both a set menu and à la carte for vegetarians), it seems to me there’s something for everyone.

 If you’d prefer a lunchtime visit – when a two-course set menu is more than enough, given that time and appetite are typically limited – it’s difficult not to be impressed by the £21.50 price tag, especially with the quality on offer.

Deserts are a particular delight, prepared to order and beautifully presented. There is much chocolate. This is a good thing! (Personal favourite is the pouring chocolate melting pudding. Divinity on a plate).

It would be remiss of me not to mention that we’re in the middle of September, which means – as far as the Merchant Hotel is concerned – halfway through the Festival of Prosecco, which has returned for its third edition this September. There are various events and special Prosecco promotions, from luxury tasting flights, and masterclass events, to unique Prosecco cocktails.

 The hotel has also introduced a number of special ‘Prosecco by the glass’ offerings, which will be available in The Great Room Restaurant and The Cocktail Bar, throughout September. If you’d like to upgrade your sparkle, the hotel often hosts Champagne and Wine dinners too – get on the mailing list for special occasions and offers, they provide great fun and networking opportunities, as well as delicious food and wine of course.  

I have never eaten out for Christmas, but I imagine if we were to, then The Merchant Great Dining Room is where I’d like to be. Or indeed in the intimate private dining room with family and friends. A drink after in the cocktail bar by the fire would be ideal for a cold Christmassy night. I imagine the bartenders in here could tell a tale or two about folk, if they weren’t so excellently trained in the art of discretion – as well as all things drink.

FOOD | ALL ROADS LEAD TO JAMES STREET

James Street South (the street) is a fairly unremarkable, narrow road – barely more than a lane – running south of, and parallel to, Donegall Square and Howard Street. In the normal course of things, it would have remained relatively anonymous; the shortcut, which everyone seemed to know, but could never name until about 14 years ago when fate was thwarted by the presence of its eponymous restaurant: James St. As a result, anyone who is anyone knows James Street; with the ‘South’ element to the name being dropped when the fine dining restaurant sadly closed last year and the grill extended across the space.

Do you, like me, ever feel that urge to go out to eat, in a place that’s busy but not obtrusively so; when you want to talk in a relaxed atmosphere, without the prospect of arguing about the service or the meal?… “My steak’s overdone… I’ve been waiting an hour!” …you know how it goes. At times like that – and many other times, to be fair – my mind will turn to James St. It’s that kind of place.

I’ve known Niall McKenna, the chef and owner, since I was about twelve years old. We shared a school bus journey. He hasn’t changed much. Still a cheeky chappy but an all-round good egg. His easy, fun personality oozes out of everything about James Street. You just know everything’s going to be fine and you can chat, socialise or do business, without unwanted distractions. Perhaps, it’s for this reason that it’s so popular with local execs, not to mention ‘ladies who lunch’; neither of whom want hassle.

There were some firm favourites, which were not going to disappear when the grill and fine dining restaurants combined; the Kilkeel crab & chilli linguine and Crab on toast with brown crab mayonnaise, to name but two. The Josper charcoal grill still takes centre stage, used to cook some of the best steaks and prime cuts of Northern Ireland, but also fresh, whole fish, pork and vegetables, too.

There’s now a larger bar area, with an extended range of wines, together with carefully selected spirits and an extensive range of whiskies. There’s room, too, for locally produced beer, cider and gins on the drinks menu.

Owned by Niall McKenna for over 15 years, the restaurant operation is managed by Paul McGovern; and very well managed, as it happens. The staff know exactly what they’re doing and do it in a friendly, engaging way. It’s a thoroughly pleasant experience, from start to finish.

 To say the menu is wide-ranging is a bit of an understatement, because there’s a wide range of menus! If you’re feeling particularly ravenous, how about tackling the thoroughly adventurous ‘sharing steak’; a 1.2 kg Tomahawk, which is everything the name suggests. Sharing seems the best thing to do!

The ‘meals for two’ also include the ubiquitous Chateaubriand. The ‘surf & turf’ is another ‘Prime Cuts’ choice, to satisfy any appetite, consisting of half a grilled Killough lobster and a 6oz fillet steak.

As for desserts, the Lemon baked Alaska is a particular hit, it seems…and the soufflé…oh my! Yet again, I’m going to start reciting the entire list…whilst salivating! You get the idea… whatever choice you make you can rest assured the food will be excellent, which makes it my ‘go to’ venue, when friends visit, which I think says it all.

And speaking of friends, one of my favourite festive things to do – apart from eat here every Friday lunchtime in December for the brilliant atmosphere and all-round craic - is to grab a group of friends together and cook up a Christmas meal in the Cookery School upstairs, with Niall at the helm of the cookers and plenty of wine to wash down the titbits of ingredients as you go along. If you book your date cleverly, like I do, the leftovers and prep done in the school will see you through to Christmas Day and you’ll have your prawn cocktail sauce and delicious stuffing all pre-made, among other goodies. The Cookery School offers loads of classes – not all with Niall it has to be said – and another favourite is the sushi and cocktails one, or the Mexican, where I learnt to make the best guacamole ever.

 And as this blog is called the F Words, I’ll round up this review with some F words about Niall and James Street -  fun, fantastic food + friends. Boom.

FASHION | THE ANKLE BOOT EDIT

The first outing of a new pair of killer boots is one of my favourite things about Autumn, especially when a rake of crunchy leaves are involved! To be fair, I'm one of those people who wear ankle boots all year around, which our not-so-hot Northern Ireland climate most definitely allows for. While they may be a constant in my wardrobe, we're properly spoilt for choice when it comes to footwear this season - from super chic to edgy AF.

2019 Booty Trends

• The Western boot trend has piqued in 2019, looking sharper than ever with squared off toes and multiple finishes from patent to print (check out Zara's pillar box red pair below).

• I'm a big fan of Winter Whites, but if that's not your thing, try cream or pale stone boots as a fresh, modern way to break up an all black outfit.

• Feeling extra bold? Opt for brights, metallics and animal print. Fear not if Prada et al are out of reach, as the High Street has your back, with absolute show stoppers at Zara, Next and forever faithful M&S.

• In complete contrast, I'm drawn to the rich earthy tones in opulent velvet and suede, as seen at Louboutin, Miista Lorelle and Mint Velvet.

• Seriously kickass chunky hiking boots are also de rigeur for AW 2019 and add serious edge to any outfit, spotted everywhere from Miu Miu to New Look.

FOOD | HOWARD STREET

There seems to be a trend, in Belfast restaurants, where address-based naming is the done thing. OX on Oxford Street; James St, where you’d expect it; and Howard St on… yes, you guessed. There’s a TV quiz question in there, somewhere, to phone in for a prize holiday! That said, there are so many good restaurants in this city, it helps distinguish which is which, in a conversation; and Howard Street is a very good restaurant.

The frontage gives little clue to the treats that await, inside. The slightly unassuming – some might suggest unkempt - appearance leans towards the industrial. A feeling that isn’t dispelled as you enter, but which belies the precision and delicacy of the food presented.

Its award-winning chef, Marty Murphy, knows what he’s doing. Howard St. uses the best of Northern Irish ingredients, which are sourced locally by the chefs and presents it with imagination and flair, beautifully cooked. Naturally, this also brings with it a strong seasonal aspect, which ensures regular revisions to the menu. It’s unlikely you’ll get the urge to go elsewhere, for something different.

The menu is an eclectic mix of traditional and Asian cooking; sometimes on the same plate. Slow cooked Ox cheeks, spiced tomato madras sauce, red cabbage & peanut pasty, mangetout salad & black vinegar dressing might give you some idea of what I mean. Contrast that with Chargrilled Pork Belly, chorizo & white bean cassoulet, Clonakilty black pudding fritter & Hispi cabbage – or Beer battered Fish & chunky chips, tartar sauce, mushy peas – and you may grasp that there’s bound to be a flavour for everyone, somewhere, no matter what you fancy.

I think it’s worth mentioning that the three-course set menu has one of the best selections I’ve seen; and at around £30, or less, it’s great value, considering the quality on offer. 

There’s a real buzz, to Howard St., and what I’d describe as a ‘lively atmosphere’ – the volume perhaps enhanced by the bare brick walls, stripped boards and high-ceilings - and just goes to emphasise that Belfast seems to have something for everyone; or something for any mood that takes you, looking at it on a personal level. Of course, this will not please all of the people, all of the time. That said, I think consistency is important. We’ve a yearning for different venues, as our moods change. In which case, I like to know where I can get what, in Belfast. Having established what I yearn, consistency avoids disappointment. Howard St. is consistently lively; has consistently good service, with consistently good food. I, for one, hope it continues that way.

It has a comprehensive list of artisan wines, together with an array of spirits. However, given all that I’ve said, regarding the atmosphere, you might think it would also provide a cocktail or two, to boot. You’d be thinking correctly!

 The blurb describes “Sean’s show-stopping cocktails from his ‘rejuvenated’ list containing our signature cocktails along with classics with a twist”; and they don’t disappoint. Just try a few; that’s the best I can say on the subject!

FOOD | MUDDLERS CLUB BELFAST

Many restaurants will select a prominent position, hoping for the occasional passing trade. The Muddlers Club doesn’t. So, it’s somewhat fortunate that it needs no such custom. Instead, it’s tucked away down a labyrinth of alleys in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter.

Named after a 200-year-old secret society, you get the feeling it wishes to remain just that; a secret. If that is the aim, it’s making a rotten job of it because those who know, know; if you know what I mean?

 The Banksy-esque wall art, as you approach, will do little to dampen any anxiety visitors might have down dark alleys; and heaven forbid that you catch a glimpse of ‘HATE’, tattooed on the fingers of your chef for the evening, before your presence is acknowledged.

 Fear not! All that trepidation will be swept away in an instant, when you’re greeted by some of the friendliest servers in Belfast.

 This is hipster territory, to be sure; purposely so. Like many of the best city restaurants, there’s a vogue in being unassuming and styled like pop-up eateries in industrial units. Seemingly, with little effort made to disguise the fact. It is the way of things - and I like it. Clearly others do too.

Despite the industrial and cool raw vibe, the food is prepared with a deftness and delicacy of touch that demonstrates anything but; and makes any such declaration almost comedic. Food like this is prepared with love; and nothing less.

 I’ve heard The Muddlers Club described as ‘OX with chips’, intended as reference to its more relaxed style; but just try those chips! Thrice fried in beef dripping, they’re something to behold. In fact, Head chef and owner, Gareth McCaughey, formerly plied his trade at OX, before venturing out on his own, which may explain the comparison, to some degree.

 “A contemporary twist on traditional Irish fare” is a phrase repeatedly applied to a number of modern, high-quality Belfast restaurants; and not without good reason. However, within that broad description, each must bring its own personality; and Muddlers certainly does that, in spades.

 The open kitchen provides a sense of theatre, as you watch chef transform the local produce into serious food. There’s a similar devotion to vegetables, which is evident at OX, but you get a firm sense that meat and fish are the main event.

 Whilst the presentation of starters and mains could - not disparagingly - be called ‘rustic’, the desserts are most certainly not. Indeed, they adorn the plates with a prettiness that throws your surroundings into sharp relief.

 There’s the ever-present “carefully considered” wine list and an extensive cocktail menu, as you’d expect, which are excellent, it must be said; but Muddlers is about the food and the faultless way it’s cooked and served.

I have two teeny critiques of Muddlers, although regular readers will know that the first - a hard wooden bistrot chair - is a critique in more than one eatery I’ve reviewed on here, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing for most people, just me.  (And I understand that with my butt I shouldn’t need cushioning, but this gal likes comfort eating - in more ways than one, clearly).

To be fair, the aesthetic just wouldn’t work with big spongy chairs either though, so as they say in Belfast, ‘I’m just sayin’’.

My second ‘critique’ - if you can call it that - is that the cheeseboard has been a bit slim on the ground on some of my visits.  Maybe I should only enjoy a slither with my glass of port and be done with it, but this gal loves her cheese, and there just wasn’t enough. (Anyone spot a trend here? ;-))

Seriously though, if Muddlers’ motto is to ‘leave them wanting more’, they’ve certainly achieved that. Cheese or no cheese. [Or just a little bit of excellently tasting cheese, as it happens].

 Some might say that The Muddlers Club is too casual to warrant a Michelin star; but if street food stalls in Singapore are good enough, then The Muddlers Club is a dead cert, in my opinion. I believe it’s just a matter of time before that first star appears, notwithstanding the fact that it’s only recently celebrated its 4th birthday.

Macmillan Cancer Support is celebrating 10 years in partnership with Marks & Spencer as headline partner of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, the charity’s flagship fundraising event. To celebrate the anniversary, M&S is introducing more products into its Macmillan Coffee Morning range than ever before, including its hugely popular fresh cream cakes, which it anticipates it will sell over two million packs of in September alone.

Available from September 1st, the range will include customer favourites such as Chocolate Eclairs (£1.70), Strawberry Tarts (£3.75), and Jam & Cream Horns (£1.70), as well as a delicious box of six Assorted Cream Cakes (£3.60). 10% from sales of each of the products in the range will be donated to Macmillan, to help the charity continue its vital work to support people living with cancer.

 Georgina Blundell, Senior Desserts Buyer at M&S said, “Our fresh cream cakes range is so popular with customers, we thought adding them to the Macmillan Coffee Morning range would be a fantastic way of celebrating the tenth anniversary of our partnership. We’re thrilled to have raised over £16m for the charity since 2010 and can’t wait to see what happens this year with our even bigger range and other fun initiatives in stores.”

 Colin the Caterpillar (£7.00) will also be donning a special purple and green outfit once again, as the iconic M&S celebration cake returns with a Macmillan ‘makeover’. Colin can be found amongst a host of other well-loved cakes, including a Lemon Drizzle (£2.80) and four-pack of Mini Victoria Sponges (£2.30), all donating to Macmillan this September.

Joining the cakes this year will be limited-edition “Fancy a Coffee?” and “Fancy a Cuppa?” mugs (£5) as well as a stylish and sustainable new travel cup (£3) for hot drinks on the move.

M&S Cafés will also be doing their bit, with 5p from every coffee and slice of cake throughout September going towards funding Macmillan professionals.

Over the past 10 years, M&S has raised £16.3m for Macmillan, whose income is almost entirely reliant on the generosity of public donations. All donations from M&S goes towards funding Macmillan professionals who support the growing number of people living with cancer to live life as fully as they can. As the number of people living with cancer is constantly growing, their needs are becoming increasingly complex and the support of the public has never been more important.
