As Holywood (and millions at home) prepare for the biggest awards night of the year, I decided to take a look back at some of the most memorable dresses to ever grace The Oscars' famous redcarpet. From Gwyneth Paltrow in that Ralph Lauren to Lupita Nyong’o in Prada here are my faves...

First up, in the 1999 awards Gwyneth Paltrow chose this beautiful soft pink taffeta gown by Ralph Lauren. Paltrow picked up the award for Best Actress for her role in ‘Shakespeare in Love’ and accessorised her look with stunning Harry Winston jewels. The look divided commentators but it was so perfect for her WASP-y shape and personality at the time. And here at The F Words it will always be a classic.

The 1954 Academy Awards saw Audrey Hepburn shine in this stunning gown by Hubert de Givenchy - who went on to dress the talented actress for seven of her later films. The dress featured a gorgeous floral pattern finished with a skinny belt. Hepburn won ‘Best Actress’ for her role in ‘Roman Holiday’.

Beautiful Spanish actress Penelope Cruz wowed in her dazzling, blush feathered Versace gown in 2007. She looked absolutely flawless in this dress which oozed opulence and immediately earned a place as one of the most iconic dresses to ever grace the Oscars' red carpet.

Emma Stone slayed in this dramatic Giambattista Valli gown back in 2012. The strawberry red/fuchsia colour against her skin and hair colour was bold, add to that a statement bow, a perfect updo and a Louis Vuitton clutch and, voila! There is nothing we don’t love about Emma’s look!

Also making a statement was Halle Berry in her dress for the 2002 Academy Awards, where she took away the gong for Best Actress, and wrote history by being the first black woman to do so. I loved this Ellie Saab dress at the time, but not so much now - however I thought I would include it here anyway, because it was so of its time. With hindsight, the dress was super daring and wowed onloookers; plus she deserved all the attention that night in this show-stopping gown with its satin train, sheer top and some modesty-covering embroidery.

Cate Blanchett looked every inch the Holywood Queen as she stepped onto the 2014 Academy Awards' red carpet. She paired the beautifully embellished gown by Armani Prive with subtle makeup and tousled waves; creating some super styling waves of her own.

Back to red again - and the year 2013 when Jennifer Anniston wore the colour of love as she stepped onto the red carpet with then beau Justin Theroux. The strapless Valentino creation was simple yet glamorous with its romantic red hue and full bodied skirt.

The world fell in love with relatively new actress Jennifer Lawrence back in 2013 (lucky for some!) when she tripped and fell in this stunning Dior gown; (shame some are falling out of love with her of late, for showing off a bit of leg, but hey - that's a whole other blog). The intricate design and daring silhouette looked incredible on her beautiful, youthful and athletic frame, so it was no surprise that her Oscar gown knocked her right to the top of all the best dressed lists - and lists of actresses that designers wanted to dress. She stuck with Dior for 2014 though (when she fell AGAIN!)...

I have saved my (so far) all-time favourite Oscars look for the 2014 awards and Lupita Nyong’o's powder blue PRADA dress, which totally stole the show at her first time nomination for her role in Twelve Years a Slave. The gown, with its stunning floaty fabric, soft tone and plunging neckline will go down in red carpet history. And PS - her green dress at the Cannes Film Festival is one of my favourites on that red carpet too. Girl got style!

FASHION | WHAT TO WEAR TO WEDDINGS NOW...?

Weddings are well and truly back, but are we dressing the same? Or are we downsizing the glamour like we downgraded our WFH workwear? Are we spending like before? Or HURR.com-ing and hiring instead?

From what we’ve seen so far, you aint seen nothin’ yet… Guests are getting their glam on more than ever these days for weddings, always one of the greatest fashion frock offs in any friendship or family circle – and we like it!

We’ve complied some of the best tips, tricks and looks from luxury to high street, so you can be the best-dressed guest.

1. THE BASICS

The start to a great outfit has to be the underwear – getting well fitted underwear that complements and works with the outfit you’re wearing is super important. An ill-fitting bra or the wrong type of underwear can completely change the way an outfit sits on the body, plus getting the correct underwear also means you’ll be comfortable all day. If you’re going to need a little room for that pudding pocket, then consider sizing up in your Spanx, it means you wont get that nauseous feeling as the elastic gets tighter around your stomach and waist area - and your lady bits wont be overly perspiring in nylon either, eeeewwww…

We love Spanx and M&S best here…. But Kim K’s Skims are still on our leader board too.

2. PERSONAL BEST

Just because it’s wedding season, doesn’t mean you have to throw your personal style out the window and suddenly adorn yourself with what some feel is appropriate wedding attire, i.e. florals and pastels! If your typical style is on the darker side, then wear darker colours, just make sure you get pops of colour from your accessories. On the flip side, if you lean more towards the pastel trend, add tougher accessories such as metallic jewellery. Just remember, the old etiquette still holds; don’t wear white – and if you have to wear a paler colour of outfit, clear it with your host first! Don’t stick solely to dresses either, there are some absolutely cracking jumpsuits out there just ready to rock the wedding disco dancefloor. For ultimate fashion kudos, name drop some niche brands such as The Vampire’s Wife or Kevan Jon.

3. ACCESSORIES

The usual go-to wedding accessory is millinery – everything from grand hats and headpieces to simple fascinators; but why not change it up a bit and put some crystal or jewelled hairclips in your hair instead? Not only are they slightly different, but they look elegant, especially during the summer months.

In terms of bags, opt for a smaller strap-handle bag, or a clutch as these are less cumbersome and will nestle perfectly into the nook of your arm as you mingle.

When it begins to get cooler in the evening, pair your dress with a cardigan closed with a brooch at the neck, as seen at Erdem, or an oversized blazer. Pashminas have had their day – for now – but they aren’t all-out quite yet.

Shoes will bring your entire look together, and to make sure you put your best foot first, look at the terrain of the venue – heels and grass do not mix well. Perhaps a pair of wedges would be more suited? Also pack a pair of formal flats for when the inevitable pain hits.

4. CONFIDENCE

The most important thing about the outfit you choose to wear, is that you feel confident and comfortable; and this comes mostly from a good fit in your frock. Don’t size down or up, the pre-event crash diets rarely work! Feeling confident is one of the easiest ways to be the best dressed at any event you attend. The same goes for your shoes, make sure your feet will withstand Champagne and canapes for two hours.

FASHION | LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: HOW TO POSE ON THE RED CARPET

Posing on the red carpet ain’t easy. There is so much to think about - where do you look, where do you put your feet and don’t even start to think about those hands… And on top of all that you also gotta look good too.

So to save you the fret, I asked my boss and Belfast FASHIONWEEK director Cathy Martin to help out and she obliged with some of her expert top tips to create the foolproof guide to posing on the red carpet that will have you posing like an A-Lister in no time.

“Let’s start with the basics such as “The Teapot”, a red carpet favourite. This can actually be hard to coordinate; I mean no one wants to literally look like they are about to pour a cup of tea. To get this one right, the elbow has to be placed on the opposite hip of the bent let like so.

Next up we have ‘The Soldier’, this one is all about power. A confident pose held by a woman (or gent!) that knows their outfit is on fire and they are ready to show it off. It’s all about keeping those shoulders back, hands down and feet apart.

Sometimes we all get a little nervous on the red carpet, and for those moments when you simply don’t know what to do, all you gotta do is “clasp those hands” and hold em’ tight!

Another popular way to get over those nerves is to bring your best friend! Everyone loves a posing partner and at least then you can try and pull off that gorgeously goofy pose (A La Cara Delavigne) without looking silly, it’s a win win situation really.

For those who prefer a bit of girly glam as opposed to the power stance, “The Crossover” is the pose for you. All you gotta do is cross those ankles with the option of throwing a simple elbow on hip action into the mix. An ultra-feminine pose that is finished with a smile.

Ok, I know I keep mentioning hands, but all models know how difficult it can be to get the positioning of hands just right and we know the red carpet, with the quick flashes and blinding lights, gives little room for mistakes, so, therefore a simple “Pocket Locket” solves the problem. All you gotta do is lock those hands in the pocket. This pose is the perfect accompaniment to a power suit or for hiding that missed manicure (come on, we’ve all done it!!!)

If you’re feeling confident the “Over-The-Shoulder Glance” allows you girlishly flirt with the camera whilst showing off that jaw-dropping backless dress. (This is also a good way to show off all those squats you’ve been doing while still looking graceful – bonus!)

Practice makes perfect and achieving the perfect pose does take time. Many A-listers stick to one pose such as, Victoria Beckham, with her - shoulders-back, diagonal tilt and powerful glance pose - you can do the same or mix it up for a bit of fun.

But with this handy how-do guide, you’ll be walking that red carpet like a pro in no time!

FASHION | POST PANDEMIC WORKWEAR - WHAT ARE WE WEARING?

Going back to the office with nothing smart to wear? Or worse, you got so used to wearing joggers at home that you don't want to go back to stretch-free formal wear? There's no need to panic.

When it comes to returning to the workplace, Northern Irish style guru Cathy Martin, who has been director of Belfast Fashion Week for 15 years, says traditional workwear is out, and smart casual is in. And it's all because of the pandemic.

“I think there was already a trend towards relaxing workwear rules, but also thankfully in how clothes are actually tailored, designed and made and tailoring isn't just so formal or restrictive anymore,” she says.
Martin points out that “and while there was already a leaning towards more casual clothes and athleisure, I don't think anyone had planned for the speed and velocity with which it changed - accelerated of course, by the pandemic and the rapid rise in work from home.”
And she adds: “Now that so many people have welcomed the flexibility of working from home, a lot of people were refusing to come back and sit in stuffy suits, both males and females.”

Nobody knows this better than Chris Suitor, tailor at Suitor Brothers on Belfast's Upper Arthur Street.

“Some guys were mail ordering jackets from us purely for their Zoom calls,” he told the Belfast Telegraph.

“We have definitely seen a decline in the number of business suits that we are selling,” he says, before adding that “since things have opened back up again, we have seen a little lift in it, but certainly it's nothing like pre-Covid”.

Men returning to the office — particularly younger men, Suitor says — want styles that are easier to wear but, of course, still sartorial.

Being dressed in a good “suit of armour” is key to feeling confident — and while styles may be changing, this never will.

Suitor, who has been in the bespoke tailoring business for 30 years, says, “We have definitely seen an uplift in our smart casual end which is more our chinos and jackets.”

But, echoing Martin, he adds: “That was happening before the pandemic. I think the pandemic has just accelerated it.”

For women, Martin recommends a stylish yet breathable jumpsuit. “Even blazers and jeans are a bit more of a thing now right across lots of industries, plus cool trainers and brightly coloured hair and accessories have appeared beyond the traditionally cool media, design, IT and other creative industries.” she says.
There's definitely an acceptance of individuality in the workplace. So, I think if someone chooses to have pink or purple hair we are culturally much more accepting of that today, whereas before, there might have been stricter rules.
The pandemic has even given the office a splash of colour. “I also see that a lot of high street stores and even designer brands are really embracing bright colour this season, and I think that's a nice antidote to what we've just been through — the restrictions of the pandemic and the bleakness of being locked down.”
She adds: “MaxMara has the most beautiful orange wool coat this season which I’d buy if I could. And on the High Street, River Island, for example, has really nice, bright pink suits and trouser suits, gorgeous bright yellow coats.”

And the most significant change according to Suitor? He answers in one word: ties. “That's probably the biggest part of our business that has declined completely,” he says. “Even the guys going to work in the suits are now generally open neck.” He adds: “We used to sell hundreds upon hundreds of ties every year and it's definitely taken a huge dip.”

But when asked if he thinks the trend away from business suits will stay for good, he says: “We are confident it's going to change. It's going to start coming back our way.”

“At the minute it's definitely still more chino, jacket and casual shirt than the business suit,” he says. “I think the business suit is still there but has certainly had the pause button pressed. I hope that we'll go back to it.”

“If you're doing an executive job, I would prefer the guys wearing suits and being sharp rather than dressed down in a pair of chinos, an open-neck shirt and a jacket,” he says.

“That's just me and my traditional outlook on things, but I totally understand why guys want to be more comfortable in what they're wearing — I totally understand, and I'm quite happy to facilitate that.”

Martin has other ideas though.

“Although I enjoy an LBD (little black dress) for a work event every now and again”, she says, “I also do agree that people were crying out for a lot more comfort.” So, has office style changed for good? “100%,” she says. “And I don't think we're going back in time any time soon.”

And it may even be for a good reason: sustainability.

“Myself and probably hundreds of thousands of others ended up doing wardrobe clearouts when we were locked down,” Martin says. “I think a lot of people realised how much stuff they had in their wardrobes that they didn't actually wear, and the statistics showed a massive increase in the number of donations when charity shops opened again. Now is definitely a great time to shop preloved, there are so many great pieces out there - online, in preloved stores and even in charity shops.
“I think the pandemic and all the lockdowns also made people realise how many pieces of clothing we all have and how many we actually need — and the answer is: a lot less.”

FASHION | PERSONAL SHOPPER – STYLIST – WARDROBE CONSULTANT: IS IT WORTH IT? YES! BECAUSE YOU’RE WORTH IT.

So many people think a style consultant is a lavish indulgence, but in truth it’s a basic weapon in the armoury of self-confidence that should never be underestimated. In today’s blog, accountant Claire Stewart shares her experience with Samara Prentice of Evolve., a personal shopper that we love here at The F Words. (Check out our editor Cathy’s LIVE with Samara over on Instagram here).

But meanwhile, read Claire’s story, we just know lots of our readers will share familiar feelings…

CLAIRE: Back in the spring of 2018, my husband and I had booked to go away for the weekend to Paris for a city break. We had got engaged there 8 years before, so it has always been a city close to our hearts.

I’d had two little girls since we got married and I was feeling a little ‘lost’ if I am honest. I’d become so absorbed in their little lives, that time for me was never a priority. I’d also put on a few pounds which made me feel frumpy. I had heard Samara from Evolve Personal Styling speak at a business event earlier that year and every she said really resonated with me. FASHION | LEARNING TO LAYER LAYER IT, STACK IT, STYLE IT

Layering jewellery can be tricky, because it should look subtle, but not untidy or overdone. It’s easy to wear the same thing over and over, or to not mix up your jewellery looks at all – here we find the happy medium in this fine art which will leave you looking effortless - whether it’s for (yet another) Zoom call or Teams meeting, or those oh-so-rare nights out these days.

FOCUS

Our first tip is to focus on two body parts; so instead of just piling on as many necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings as you can, focus on your neck & wrist, or ears and ankles etc. This will create a more considered, less chaotic aesthetic and ensure there is a sense of style to it.

SPACING

It’s essential to create a nicely balanced look when layering; so spacing is key.

Each piece should complement the next one, and they shouldn’t look cluttered or get twisted among themselves, so the goal is to have each piece displayed naturally and not blocking each other’s view. When it comes to necklaces, if you have pendants or coins on your chains, try to choose chains with varying lengths, so that you can see the detail of each piece. This stops it from looking cluttered and shows off all your jewellery.

VARIATION – TEXTURE, LENGTH, WEIGHT

There is a delicate art to simple additions and mixing up your combinations can make all the difference when putting an outfit together.

Try to mix up delicate pieces with more statement ones to find a natural balance. This will keep your jewellery looking elegant and curated. The same rule can be applied to earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Too many chunky, dense pieces make you look weighed down so it’s important to get variety. Using a mixture of more statement pieces paired with some delicate, daintier designs is the ultimate way to show off your varied collection. Rather than simply layering 4/5 simple chains atop one another, why not introduce one with a pendant or a couple of charm details? It'll create a more curated look with the base chains acting as supportive backing dancers to the main event.

VARY YOUR LENGTHS

Perhaps the most obvious hack, but undoubtedly a commonly forgotten one, is that wearing several necklaces of the same length does nothing but create a chunky metal mass with the inevitable threat of repetitive tangles, so instead, stagger your necklace lengths - not necessarily all equidistant - to create flow and nonchalant French girl ‘je ne sais quoi’.

Our advice: When styling same metal necklaces, start with your smallest pendant on the shortest length that feels comfortable. Wear the bigger necklace on the longest length.

COLOUR CONSISTENCY

This is where the experts don’t always agree! Some pros – usually the more traditional ones - swear by making your layered jewellery really stand out by using the same metal colour throughout your whole look. If you’re feeling silver, then really GO for silver. Throw in subtle matching earrings, a chunky chain bracelet and even match this to your belt buckles or shoe detailing. The same goes for gold.

Other experts completely contrast that advice by suggesting mixing it up – both in terms of metals and gems - for a more natural and interesting feel. Go for gold-silver and a little bit of rose gold action for the hell of it, they believe anything goes, as long as there are intelligently put-together layers with synergy and focus.

A SENSE OF SYNERGY

Whether layering your necklaces or your earrings, it's clever to have some semblance of a theme running throughout. Whether it's as subtle as small diamond injections here and there or as literal as the same pendant style on several pieces, something to tie the look together and justify your selection keeps the look feeling more curated and less thrown together.

COMPLEMENT YOUR CLOTHING….

If you are layering necklaces, the neckline and print of your top can be super important. The simpler it is, the more space you have to play around with and the more decorative you can be. If you are wearing a neutral coloured tee, then up can up your jewellery game to the next level.. Generally, wearing more neutral and plain colours when layering is best. It really makes the jewellery speak for itself.

AVOID OVERKILL

If you have a tendency to be a bit OTT with your jewellery, there's a very simple way to avoid overkill. Make like Gabrielle Chanel and when you think your look is complete, remove the last thing you put on. It'll keep the original, curated layers as well as the intended sense of ease and simplicity. You want to keep it cool and sophisticated rather than overwhelming and over-done.

But don’t overthink it, remember the most important thing is to have fun!”

FASHION | SUSTAINABLE STYLE 2.0

Regular readers will know that I am a fan of living a more sustainable life, especially over the last five years since I’ve really educated myself on mass consumerism, and the effects of mass consumption on our world. If, like me, you love fashion, but you’ve not read Fashionopolis by Dana Thomas, then get thee to a bookstore, because it’s a NEED TO READ book which shines a spotlight on the extent of our need for new - and a dire need for change. If you’re not a bookie type, then check out the documentaries on Netflix around fast fashion and climate change - there are many! Either way, it’s time to educate ourselves a bit more on how our choices as consumers affect the planet.

In this blog I’m going to focus on fashion - and I’m rejigging this piece now for 2021, because, not only does the message need repeating, but also because I’ve teamed up with FASHION FORVEVER NI to really drive home their message to keep clothing and textiles out of landfill. Incredibly, across the UK, we throw away 1million tonnes of textiles per year, with 300,000 tonnes ending up in landfill - that’s just plain wrong when every single textile has a potential second (or third, or more) life or use. And not just as clothes on our backs (we’re talking dog beds from old sheets, rags from torn clothing etc etc)

We all need to be more aware of the impact that our everyday choices have on the world around us, including what we wear. The pollution caused by ‘fast fashion’ and the unethical production practices that many fashion producers use has led to the fashion and textiles industry having the worst reputation for climate damage. It brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘a crime of fashion’. Choosing natural fibres over chemically based ones is a good choice, but only marginally better given the amount of water that is used to create just one pair of jeans or a cotton shirt (10-20,000L of water!!).

The need for speedy production and low costs in order to deliver frequent new collections means that environmental corners are often cut, leading to water pollution, toxic chemical waste and increased levels of textile waste, not to mention unethical employment practices, (but that’s a whole other issue!).

Customers are demanding better sustainable practices from their fashion providers, so the fashion industry needs to step up, join rank and become more responsible. Some only pay lip service to sustainability, and to date there is no governing body to control what is labelled sustainable and what’s not, so there is A LOT of greenwashing going on. I mean, how can a dress made from 100% polyester (basically plastic) be labelled ‘conscious’ at one well-known high street store?!?

The growth in popularity of resell sites Vestaire Collective, HEWI, DePop and eBay highlights how the industry is changing. Preloved pages are popping up all over Instagram - both those of bricks n mortar stores now forced to close, as well as individuals selling off their wares. And this growth is happening because more customers are demanding it. Maybe through this pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns we’re also realising that we don’t actually need as much newness as the flashy marketing teams lead us to believe? Either way, the growth in circular fashion is a good thing - and long may it continue.

I think it’s important to say at this point, that I still love creative design and fashion, and will still buy clothes; but I will do so more consciously. I will seek ways to celebrate my passion while protecting the planet. I will check labels. I will purchase fewer, and when I do purchase I will do so with the planet and long term in mind.

As well as buying and selling on sites like eBay, dePop, HEWI and Vestiaire Collective (which I've done for years), one of the biggest changes I've made to date is to completely revamp the format of Belfast Fashion Week, from a collection of catwalk events to a RESALE RAIL SALE. (I don’t know when the next one will be, but stay tuned… And meanwhile let’s live for DePop and eBay and Instagram for inspo).

Resale markets are just one way in which we can make small changes and raise awareness of the importance of slow, sustainable fashion - and illustrate how reselling can help make a tangible difference. My personal aim in creating and hosting them was to help normalise shopping second hand for fashion; but also to increase awareness of the bigger issue of fashion and textiles eco-damage, and help show how reselling/buying second hand can help to balance out what’s been done and prevent further extensive damage with a constant demand for new, new, new.

To see real change in our lifetime, we all need to make more mindful, considered decisions about what and how we buy, so I’ve drafted up a list of small actions we can all take, because individual actions add up! Please don’t feel overwhelmed all at once, no-one is expecting you to overhaul your lifestyle overnight, but having said that, every little effort really does help the collective solution, so you can choose to dip in and out of as many of these suggestions as possible. Just whatever works for you. :-)

LET’S START WITH WHAT YOU HAVE…

SLOW DOWN by sticking with what you have for as long as possible. Think #30Wears or #30WearsChallenge. REWEAR favourite items. No one needs a new outfit for every single social occasion - I have some favourites that are over two decades old which I dig out every year or two and still love wearing. And I LOVE to see celebs in the same outfit twice!

SHARE - We can use hire sites like HURR to hire special occasion items or shop ‘n’ share with friends
SWAP where possible - with friends or at a specific event - a win:win solution resulting in a double save from landfill.
It seems like a celeb thing to do, but it’s cheaper and way more cost-effective than you think to INVEST in the services of a stylist to help you shop our own wardrobes & create lots of variations from what we have, to help avoid buying needlessly
AND IF YOU DONT WANT SOMETHING ANYMORE….
RECYCLE regularly – sell, swap or donate unworn clothing to increase its life cycle.
CONSIDER what’s in your wardrobe and what actually suits you and your lifestyle. Can you see yourself wearing a particular garment for a long time? If not, then donate.
IF YOU REALLY JUST WANT SOMETHING ‘NEW’
SHOP SECOND HAND to increase the lifespan of existing pieces and remove the negative impact of production. Opt for high quality used or vintage where possible. We can use sites like eBay, DePop, HEWI, Vestiaire Collective & ASOS Marketplace, as well as bricks and mortar preloved or second hand stores and charity shops AND the massive growth in resellers on Insta. (Just look up the hashtags like #reseller #thriftedfind etc)
THINK about what you buy, what you're supporting through your purchase and how much wear you'll get out of each item. Ask yourself - will it last? And how many times will I wear it? Am I investing in a forever piece? Or am I buying with my existing wardrobe in mind and complementing what I already have to create new looks?
CHECK the labels to see how a garment is made, check both the composition and whether the fabric is recycled or organic, plus where it came from (many clothes come with a massive carbon footprint)
AVOID synthetics where possible, unless they affect functionality, as these have a significant environmental impact in production and shed micro plastics when washed.
SHOP LOCAL from smaller independent designers. A large initial outlay will work longer and harder in your wardrobe.

All of this doesn't mean we have to take the fun out of shopping. It can be possible to use the High Street responsibly; change all begins with our mindset, though next time you crave a quick fix, do pause and consider vintage or re-tailoring something you already own. It just takes a little thought. And if you think a stylist is a really indulgent expense, just think of all the money wasted on impulse buys in the past.

A quick, but important side note here: As it stands, sustainable fashion isn’t accessible for everyone (size, income vs affordability of new organic/sustainable fashion); but that could change if it became the norm for people of all demographics. The more we support and normalise rewearing, or shopping independent vintage & preloved shops and buying/wearing second hand, the bigger and better those outlets will become.

Once you get into the swing of things, recycling clothes is fun and easy to do - as well as a very kind thing to do for the planet and our future generations. It's time for a fashion revolution - we can't wait, and nor can the planet. FASHION | Looks to Steal from LFW 2020

This season, the British Fashion Council declared London Fashion Week February 2020 a 'city-wide celebration' themed around Positive Fashion - to celebrate industry best practice and encourage positive change. The fabulous creative festival embraced new audiences and included public shows celebrating designers, Temperley London and De La Vali.

I was delighted to see a spotlight on sustainability, heartily supported by Irish designer, Richard Malone demonstrating a passionate ethical commitment throughout his work, including a collaboration with the British Fashion Council and Bags of Ethics™ on the LFW reusable canvas bag. His show notes even included a mission statement outlining the details of his practices with full transparency, right down to the hourly rates (25 pounds an hour minimum) for the local cutters and tailors he employs. Bravo!

On to the fashion and every show at LFW was incredibly inspiring... I've rounded up my favourite themes to take into the year ahead.

SPARKLES & METALLICS

Glitz loving Northern Irish designer, JW Anderson, wowed with spellbinding sequins topped with floating feathered shoulders, while Richard Quinn's pieces shared hundreds of thousands of Swarovski crystals between them.

ANDROGYNOUS

As ever, Margaret Howell delivered timeless pieces verging on the androgynous. I'm loving these pinstriped trousers, with a ski-whiff tie and grey shirt and adore the retro twist on this mossy green Burberry suit, paired with a rust shirt and tan leather accessories.

CHOCOLATE

'Cos you can't beat finding wardrobe inspo in a bar of chocolate. Seriously though, since when did head to toe brown look so utterly fabulous?!

CUT-OUTS

All hail Christopher Kane, King of the cut-outs, a theme reflected in across the board, from the extreme Kane to more wearable Preen and a subtle nod by VB.

STRIPES

I do love a good stripe, as do Erderm and Molly Goddard, so I'm in excellent company.

OPULENCE
Hot pink satin, tangerine velvet and a golden cape were just the tip of the iceberg, with multiple designers sending a plethora of fit-for-a-Queen pieces down the catwalk. Superb.

CHECKS

Check champ, Burberry showed a varied menu from striking pink and black to rich autumnal tones, while Erderm went a little more full on with this show stopping dress.

ALL WHITE?

White tights, white dresses, white boots. Add a little light to your outfit a la Ashley Williams, Victoria Beckham et al.

FASHION | Oscars 2020: Best Dressed

Awards Season drew to a close last Sunday with the ever glitzy Oscars ceremony - and with so much glamour to choose from, I've been deliberating over my favourite frocks ever since.

Shout out to our very own Saoirse Ronan, who stood out in a sea of black in her lavender, ivory and black gown with deep V-neck, ruffles and moiré skirt, paired with Gucci High jewellery. This was a Marmite dress with some loving and some loathing it. Personally I think Saoirse can rock anything, so I’m pro.

I was happy to see sustainability a big theme on the red carpet.. in fact the V-neck bodice of Saoirse's gown was made of black satin left over from the dress she wore to last weekend's Bafta Film Awards. Nice work!

As ever, several celebs stole the spotlight more than others, but none moreso than Natalie Portman, with a 'fashion feminist' statement in a black floor-length Dior Haute Couture cape, embroidered with the names of all the female directors who were not nominated. Let's hear it for the girls!

Brie Larson sparkled in a cape dress made with more than 120,000 sequins, 110,000 glass beads, 13,000 Swarowski crystals, and 6,500 pink strass jewels, requiring over 1,200 hours of hand embroidery. What, this old thing?!

She wasn't alone of course. Janelle Monáe dazzled in a custom crystal-laquered silk lamé tulle mesh evening dress with a striking draped hood. Her gown was fully hand-embroidered with more than 168,000 Swarovski crystals. Just WOW.

Not forgetting the boys of course... Billy Porter's Giles Deacon skirt was inspired by the artwork in Buckingham Palace.

If you're in need of extra motivation to get yourself to the gym, walk this way to spruce up your sportswear and satisfy your inner fitness freak.

With athleisure now established as a stand alone fashion niche, style, functionality and comfort can be combined in a breeze. From High Street to big name brands, new designs tantalise every season to help us feel good en route to looking great(er)!

Choose carefully and you won't need to update your workout wardrobe every season. Think about what you really need for the activities you love... naturally this will vary hugely from yoga to skiing and everything in between. To narrow things down a bit, I've focused on the best gear out there for those of us pounding the streets or pumping iron during the busiest season for gyms all over the country.

With moisture-wicking fabric, cleverly-placed mesh panels and thoughtful cut-outs, much of today's athletic clothing is truly meant for athletic pursuits. All that's left to do is figure out what works for you.

If you're running in the Winter months, do you need a long sleeved top or heavier weight leggings? Would a cosy, loose fit top be useful en route to and from classes? Do you need to layer up until you warm up at the gym?

Is there anything better than getting home at the end of a long day and pulling on soft, cosy clothes that feel like wearing a virtual hug? I've had a long term love affair with loungewear and it seems like the rest of the world is catching on, as the shops are teaming with inviting pieces. It's safe to say that loungewear has had an official upgrade - and not just for wearing indoors. It's totally de rigeur for fashion editors and celebs to step out in luxe co-ords paired with chic accessories - and why not?!

No ensemble could be more perfect for a Netflix marathon, weekend brunch with friends, working from home - or just answering the door to that cute courier. Again. While paint-stained joggers may have their time and place, shove them to the back of the closet for now. It's perfectly possible to combine comfort and style while chilling out at home - and let's face it, when we look good, we feel even better!

So where to start?

Choose a neutral colour palette in grey, camel or cream that you can easily mix and match - and opt for loose fitting pieces in soft cotton, wool or cashmere. Velvet adds an element of instant luxe - and thankfully couldn't be further from the Juicy tracksuits of the noughties (remember those? ...shudder!) - check out two great options from Next and Zara below.

I personally love to pair slouchy knits with high waisted, wide-leg trousers. Rosie for Autograph and the White Company both have gorgeous cashmere sets, with super alternatives at ASOS and Topshop.

FASHION | The Wonders of a Winter Day Dress

I'm a huge fan of dresses at any time of the year, but on a freezing cold Winter morning, you just can't beat the ease of slinging on a single garment before racing out the door. Essentially an entire outfit in one fell swoop, the joy of dresses means zero faff while hunting for things that match - oh and did I mention the comfort?

One of the things I love most about this season's dresses is the variety of gorgeously tactile fabrics they come in... soft wool, smooth satin, sumptuous velvet, cosy cord and sensual leather. They don't just look good; they feel good.

Usually in heavier fabrics, richer hues and longer hemlines than previous seasons, Winter dresses work for every occasion from hanging out with kids to the office or lunch with friends. Add a chunky cardigan or oversized blazer with boots or trainers for a casual look - or dress up with heeled boots and a long wool coat for smarter occasions. When it's proper freezing, add tights and layer over a thin top or roll neck.

While dark florals are on trend for Winter 2019/20 (Topshop and Rixo have some gems), there are so many styles to choose from. Wondering how to wear them? Here are my tips:

Any time, any place: loose tiered maxi (or mini) + Western boots or chunky trainers
Casual days: loose knit dress + chunky ankle boots
The office: shirt dress + heeled boots

If you're looking for an instant update for your wardrobe, put your best foot forward in one of Autumn’s staples, the knee high boot. I'm a huge fan of wardrobe items that work again and again - with everything I already have and on any occasion – and a good boot will do just that.

Not only will they keep you warmer and add a new lease of life to outfits, knee high boots are one of those gems that, once discovered, you'll wonder how you lived without. They look great and work hard, making so many pieces more wearable - and a good quality pair should last for years.

Use tall boots to bring life to your favourite midi, add sass to skinnies or retro charm to a short hemline and bare legs... the possibilities are endless. Luxe yet truly practical, it's time to embrace the elegant knee high boot.

I recommend investing in a really good pair that are both exciting and durable enough to suit your everyday lifestyle. I'm loving long-line cowboy boots for daywear... try Topshop's Winter white pair or the gorgeous Golden Goose with traditional Western style stitching.

FASHION | The Day Bag Ed

What each of us look for in a day bag varies enormously depending on our lifestyle - and if you're anything like me, which day of the week it is! In this edit I've included five of the biggest day bag trends for 2019, in a mix of styles that should allow everyone to tick at least one box.

From belt bags for hands-free fans - mums, dog walkers et al - to large roomy totes for those of us who like to lug a laptop, spare shoes and full day's worth of snacks around with us. And probably a makeup bag. And several kids' toys, just in case. You get the picture...

As budgets also vary as widely as our needs, I've included both designer and budget alternatives of each style. NB these aren't really intended to be dupes - just similar, more affordable options.

1. THE SHEARLING

It started with teddy coats and shearling boots - and now handbags are following suit. Cosy up and add a touch of softness to your day with strokable shearling, faux fur and snuggly textiles spotted everywhere from Chanel to Dries Van Noten. There are tonnes to choose from on the High Street... M&S also has a more roomy version in ginger for £25.

2. THE LARGE TOTE

These need no explanation as no-one can argue with the virtues of a roomy tote. As well as being endlessly useful on a working day, I love to chuck my phone and purse into one when I'm going clothes shopping. Any opportunity to say no to plastic bags - plus it looks and feels so much better! The Tom Ford is to die for, but I really think this leather Next version looks way more expensive than its price tag.

3. THE LUXE CROC EFFECT

Elevate any look with croc accessories (I prefer faux) to add instant polish. Check out 2019's version of Chloe's first ever cult bag, the Paddington, once spotted on the arm of every supermodel and It girl... and instantly recognisable with its logo padlock. Who remembers how heavy these were?! The Aby is more chic, structured and the perfect medium sized bag. Kurt Geiger's Carvela alternative is also super stylish.

Another throwback - this time from the 90s - heralded by the return of the swoony Fendi baguette. Ideal for the minimalist among you who carry only a purse, phone and lipstick in their bag (hands free shopping anyone?). I'm happy to say that this style is widely available on the High Street, with Zara and ASOS turning up some excellent designs. The Fendi is available in a rainbow of colours, including the original logo print and striking gold metallic.

5. THE BELT BAG

For an even more pared back effect, go completely hands free with a belt bag. AKA bum bag, waist bag, fanny pack... I'll stick with belt bag thanks! A forever favourite with dads and globetrotters, Prada has taken this trend to another level - and everyone is following suit. Pair with jeans and a chunky knit for running errands that require both hands; use to cinch in your waist for a more fitted silhouette or wear cross body at chest level if you're uber cool (and less well endowed than me).

Multibagging (wearing two or more bags at once) is also a thing now, so if the challenge of choosing gets too much, you're sorted!

FASHION | COOL KICKS

Remember when we thought it was radical to switch heels for trainers on the daily commute? Today a dress/suit/ball gown + trainers = standard... and I love that. Been doing it for years (and I have to say, been teased for it too, before the same people started doing it to…)

Anyhoo, with fabulous sneakers spotted at Louboutin, Valentino and Chloe - trust me - this street style is sticking around! And if you want to get in on the action, it's totally possible to make your off-duty look a fashion statement with my round up of the best kicks of the season.

So is it really possible to combine comfort and cool? Absolutely! Choose from sporty, street style or statement - and pair with whatever the hell you like. Mixing fashion and function is always a winner, so athleisure is a staple look for me... hectic days require comfort and I often sport gym gear or gorgeous leggings (anyone else tried and loved the SPANX leather look ones yet?!) plus sneakers while on the go. I also love pairing trainers with dresses and tailored trousers for an effortlessly stylish vibe and a welcome change from my business heels.

So what's everyone wearing on the streets of Belfast and beyond?! Local fashionistas can be seen in Golden Goose, Veja and Vans, while those not afraid to step up the style stakes don something a little more out there, with in-your-face chunky platform styles.

A few of the most dazzling tips I picked up at Diamond School!

Until the middle of the twentieth century, there was no agreed-upon standard by which diamonds could be judged. The first - now globally accepted standard for describing diamonds - is colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. Today, the 4Cs of diamond quality is the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond, anywhere in the world.

COLOUR: The colour evaluation of most gem-quality diamonds is actually based on the absence of colour. A chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond has no hue, like a drop of pure water, and consequently, a higher value. Many colour distinctions are so subtle that they are invisible to the untrained eye, but make a very big difference in diamond quality and price.

CLARITY: Natural diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in the earth. This process can result in a variety of characteristics called 'inclusions' and external characteristics called 'blemishes.' Evaluating diamond clarity involves determining the number, size, relief, nature and position of these characteristics - and how they affect the overall appearance of the stone. While no diamond is perfectly pure, the closer it comes, the higher its value.

CARAT: Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weighs; a metric 'carat' is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat can be subdivided into 100 'points', allowing very precise measurements to the hundredth decimal place. While diamond price generally increases with carat weight, two diamonds of equal carat weight can have very different values depending on their clarity, colour, and cut.

CUT: We often think of a diamond's cut as shape (round, emerald, pear), but its cut grade is really about how well a diamond's facets interact with light. Precise artistry and workmanship are required to fashion a stone so that its proportions, symmetry and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond. The quality of cut is crucial to the diamond's final beauty and value - and is the most complex and technically difficult element to analyse.

FASHION | NAIL ALERT!

Nails certainly ruled the AW19 catwalks where extra bold was flavour of the season. Think French mani but with a modern revival, glitter overload with added bling (especially pearls) and lots of spiced neutrals (think of the colour of spices from your cupboard – paprika, cinnamon etc) which make your standard neutrals a whole lot bolder.

FASHION | Hair Accessories for Grown Ups

Throwback 90s hair accessories are having a revival moment and I'm all over it. Girlish headbands and hair clips have had a grown-up makeover and add instant edge to an outfit, without looking too try-hard.

We have Prada (and perhaps Gossip Girl) to thank for their renaissance, turning the padded satin head bands of the 90s into one of the most currently coveted accessories.

With so many options from Topshop to Gucci, this is one trend that everyone can afford to experiment with, emulating style icons from Grace Kelly to Alexa Chung. Check out some super gorgeous options in metallic leather, made to order by local designer, Grainne Maher.

I'm a fan of headbands perched on loose hair styles and statement clips with up-dos.... both work equally well on every length from pixie crops to waist length locks.

Not only pretty, these new hair accessories are practical too.... nothing like an oversized tortoiseshell hair clip to tuck away the fringe you knew you'd regret - and headbands are the most stylish way to conceal day 3 hair and grown-out roots.

We love couture millinery brand Merve Bayindir for their chic designs. As contemporary innovators, the brand explores the debate between architecture and fashion to develop ground-breaking designs. Founded by mother-daughter duo, Yasemin Bayindir and Merve Bayindir in 2011, the eponymous brand has produced a range of chic and striking collections from occasion wear to bridal to show-stopping pieces. The designer focused on using a combination of classic methods, as well as experimental techniques throughout the collection. While the bases of the hats are all made using the most traditional methods of millinery making, there are modern elements such as mirrors, feathers and innovative shapes that are evident within all pieces. The variety of styles in each line include formal wear, party wear, bridal as well as beachwear, providing a hat for any occasion. The entire collection is completely handmade, from the silk flowers to the colours of the fabrics. All hats are made in house and the materials used are all ethically sourced from fair trade companies - now that is true craftmanship!

FASHION | Disco Pants

Even on Mondays, I'm partial to a touch of subtle sparkle (a diamond ring should cover it)... but at the weekend, I come over all Studio 54, ready to embrace spectacular shimmer from head-to-toe! If you fancy joining me, set aside that reliable little black dress and pull on your disco pants - it's time to turn every head in the room with this season's ultimate party attire: the sequinned trouser suit.

Easier to wear than you might think, wide legged pants and a loose fitting jacket give an air of relaxed glamour and are a personal favourite... I love how the sparkles catch the light as the fabric moves with my body. (Don't even think about avoiding the dance floor in an outfit like this!) I've been wearing the white suit by ASOS (see below), though have my eye on the striking pewter Exquise number from Blush Boutique in Belfast.

If suits aren't your bag, glimmering separates or jumpsuits are a great option, with the fringed sequinned trousers from Zara (below) a fabulous bargain at £25.99. At the other extreme, check out the glistening gold and black leopard 70s disco-inspired suit by Halpern with high rise, kick flare pants (yes the sale price is equally spectacular!).

Sequins as daywear are also de rigueur and, as ever, I'm all for maximising the price per wear. Pair sequinned trousers with chunky trainers, a loose knit and biker, or throw a glittering jacket over distressed faded jeans and cowboy boots.
