Our faces have a whopping 43 muscles and 300 pressure points which relate to every part of the body, so a great facial massage has a positive impact all over. Not only does it leave skin glowing and plumped, it also reduces tiredness and sluggishness overall. Who in their right mind would turn that down?!
We can all benefit from adding light daily massage into our skincare routine - it only takes a few minutes every morning or evening (think of it as self care); it's free - and you can teach yourself to do it at home.
Start by being more intentional when applying skincare products... work in sections as you circle with fingertips and apply light, sweeping pressure on the forehead, cheeks and jawline. Once you get the hang of it, your face will thank you for a longer weekly session (at home) or a monthly treatment by a professional facialist. I swear by the latter and recommend the facials at The Merchant Hotel spa, and at Galgorm, as well as Zest in Andersonstown plus Skin Medi Spa on the Lisburn Road.
DOES FACIAL MASSAGE REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Absolutely... here are ten benefits for starters:
1. Removes tension and stress from the jawline.
2. Improves blood circulation to speed up skin cell renewal and reveal plump new skin.
3. Adds radiance to the skin.
4. Helps flush out congestion-inducing toxins.
5. Improves facial structure with prolonged use.
6. Stimulates the lymphatic system and drains fluids, reducing puffiness.
7. Stimulates endorphins - it literally makes you feel good!
8. Encourages collagen production for a healthy, youthful glow.
9. Allows skincare to be more readily absorbed into the face.
10. Helps you relax.
There's no doubt that it's totally worth the effort to give your face a workout every day... try completing your skin routine mid evening rather than waiting until you're exhausted and can't be bothered - guilty! Use a facial roller and oil while you're watching TV or reading/ listening to an audio book in bed. Think of it as a moment of mindfulness, where you take a few minutes out just for you. Always use upward movements and always use a plant based oil or rich moisturising product as a base, to avoid dragging the skin. I love Image Vital C Hydrating Face Oil which you can buy online here:

HOW TO MASSAGE LIKE A PRO
Celebrity facialist Nichola Joss - visited by Kate Moss and Gisele Bundchen for an all-natural facelift - demos her tips for facial massage on Instagram Stories here.
And in this video, Queen of Skin, Abigail James demonstrates how to perform an uplifting face massage at home, which she recommends doing once or twice a week.
You could also include some of these techniques during your daily cleanse.
NB facials and facial massage is not recommended for several weeks after botox or fillers as injectables need time to settle - ask your practitioner for advice.
