As we hurtle towards the end of January and funds are scarce, I'm guessing we could all benefit from a bit of weekend craic that doesn't break the bank?! If purse strings don't stretch to a night on the tiles pre pay day, there's plenty of fun to be had indoors (I wasn't referring to that kind of fun, though knock yourself out should the opportunity arise!). Staying in is the new going out after all - and I've come up with five ideas for a low budget night in.
POTLUCK DINNER PARTY
They call it pot luck but tbh I'd recommend agreeing what everyone brings in advance to avoid ending up with 3 lasagnes, 2 pots of chilli and zero veg or booze. Theme your evening, select options from a favourite cookbook (see our bestseller book review for ideas) or simply assign dishes according to your friends' strengths - or weaknesses - if in doubt, put the non cooks in charge of drinks & nibbles!
MOVIE NIGHT
Chick flick, thriller or comedy... take your pick, get the snacks in, the fire lit and bubbles opened. It's hard to beat a popcorn-fuelled cosy night in with the gals. Pizza delivery & PJs optional. I recommend Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Irishman or a classic like The Devil Wears Prada or Sex in the City.
CLOTHES SWAP
This really doesn't need to be as complicated as it sounds, though it does help if you and your guests are a similar size or really into awesome accessories! No need to entirely empty your wardrobe... everyone can bring 1-3 items each and once everyone has arrived, start swapping! Refreshments add to the fun of try on sessions... check out our DIY Cocktails for inspo!
BOOK CLUB
If you've always wanted to be part of one, why not start your own? That way you get to choose who is involved and kick off the reading list! Meet at a different member's house each month to talk literature, enjoy snacks and have a tipple. It's a great way to see more of your friends or make new ones... check out How to Start a Book Club that Doesn't Suck for more ideas.
PAMPER NIGHT
Gather up a bunch of girlfriends for some mutual TLC... even better if they are blessed with beauty skills! Mini facials, masks and manicures work well in a group. Or go solo with a bath filled to the top with bubbles and essential oils, light your favourite candle, play your favourite tunes and bliss out!
