FASHION | The Wonders of a Winter Day Dress

I'm a huge fan of dresses at any time of the year, but on a freezing cold Winter morning, you just can't beat the ease of slinging on a single garment before racing out the door. Essentially an entire outfit in one fell swoop, the joy of dresses means zero faff while hunting for things that match - oh and did I mention the comfort?

One of the things I love most about this season's dresses is the variety of gorgeously tactile fabrics they come in... soft wool, smooth satin, sumptuous velvet, cosy cord and sensual leather. They don't just look good; they feel good.

Usually in heavier fabrics, richer hues and longer hemlines than previous seasons, Winter dresses work for every occasion from hanging out with kids to the office or lunch with friends. Add a chunky cardigan or oversized blazer with boots or trainers for a casual look - or dress up with heeled boots and a long wool coat for smarter occasions. When it's proper freezing, add tights and layer over a thin top or roll neck.

While dark florals are on trend for Winter 2019/20 (Topshop and Rixo have some gems), there are so many styles to choose from. Wondering how to wear them? Here are my tips:

• Any time, any place: loose tiered maxi (or mini) + Western boots or chunky trainers

• Casual days: loose knit dress + chunky ankle boots

FOLIO | PETER PAN AT THE LYRIC THEATRE

Paul Boyd returns to the Lyric Theatre this Christmas with an exciting new musical of Peter Pan, adapted from the play by JM Barrie. I totally loved his Alice in Wonderland last Christmas, so I couldn’t wait to go on this latest adventure to Neverland; and I wasn’t disappointed!

Boyd stays with the narrative of JM Barrie’s classic story and retells it beautifully. It isn’t always easy to retell a vintage tale in a modern way, but Boyd does it with ease, keeping both older and younger viewers entertained and on the edge of their seats. Expect to be taken on an exciting adventure full of action with lots of ‘ahh’ moments and laughs in between!

The story synopsis is age-old. Neverland is in crisis. Pirates have arrived on the island and the Neverlanders are trying to keep them away. Miles away, in a pretty, cosy nursery in London, Wendy Darling (played excellently by Rhiannon Chesterman) is reading the exciting tales of this fairytale land to her younger brothers Michael (Rea Campbell-Hill) and John (Christopher Finn). Just as they arrive at the concluding chapter, they realise it is missing, before an unannounced visitor at the window grabs their attention.  The visitor is bad-boy Peter Pan from their story book, the boy who never grows up. He whisks them off on a perilous voyage, an adventure that is, in fact, living out the missing final chapter. Michael Mahony’s Pan perfectly captures the essence of a lost boy yearning to be saved, a touching theme that Mahony seizes perfectly.

And while Peter Pan may be naughtily bad, he’s nothing compared to Captain Hook, played brilliantly by Allison Hardin as an exotic and menacing Captain Jess Hook.  Valentina loved that Captain Hook was a female – a sign of the times perhaps, although I believe that this was, in fact, in keeping with Barrie’s early intentions considering the story suggests she may be the fairytale version of the Darlings’ not-so-nice nanny!  

The play uses a group of local children for the Lost Boys and native people and they put on an excellent performance alongside the professional cast. Every single member of the cast shone in their performance and I couldn’t name a single fault! I especially loved the mermaids who put on an amazingly camp operatic performance – such a great treat!

Special mention to Stuart Marshall for the amazing set as well as Conleth White for the lighting, Paul Boyd himself for the music and Gillian Lennox and Erin Charteris for the costume.  All elements weaved effortlessly together, creating moments of suspense whilst moving the story along.

This is a wonderful play for all the family, and it gets a big thumbs up from V and I.

FOLIO | BEAUTY AND THE BEAST AT GOH BELFAST

It is only 5th December and already I have seen this year’s Grand Opera House panto twice, so I think it’s fair to say I’m a panto addict.  But to be honest, the Grand Opera House panto really is THAT good. It is undoubtedly one of my favourite shows of the year and a fond annual tradition Valentina and I have had since she was one!

Classic tale, Beauty and the Beast, is this year’s story and it is extra special because queen of pantomime, May McFettridge (comedian John Linehan) is celebrating her 30th anniversary treading the boards at Belfast’s Grand Opera House. She has been joined on the Grand Opera House panto stage by many greats in her time – from Britt Ekland to Gareth Gates and many in between, but this year sees Ben Richards (Footballers’ Wives, Holby City, Hollyoaks) take the role of the Beast as well at Britain’s Got Talent favourite Mandy Muden as Magic Mandy.

The tale tells the story of the beautiful Belle who, dreaming of a happier life, finds herself transported to a cursed castle and held captive by a hideous Beast (Richards) who was transformed from a handsome but selfish prince after turning away an enchantress dressed as a beggar years previously.   The selfish and now brutally ugly prince lives in fear that he will remain a beast forever, until the kind-hearted Belle enters his castle and in time makes him feel human again.  

We all know how the tale turns out, but the question is, how the GOH team will tell the story of whether Belle sees beyond the monster and falls in love with her captor before the last petal falls from the enchantress’s rose? Or will the Beast’s selfishness cost him the world he once knew and the hand of the girl who has melted his heart?

Qdos Entertainment stages the show and, being the world’s largest pantomime producer, you can imagine the spectacular quality of the set – mesmerising for both little ones & adults alike with some stunning special effects and fantastic quality costumes. As a fashionista, I truly believe that on stage you have to go big or go home, and the costumes in Grand Opera House never disappoint. They don’t try to be cool and modern and go all muted with modern interpretations - quite the contrary! - because there is an abundance of colour and dazzle to match the fun songs and hilarious (sometimes hideously funny) script, with camped up dance routines that you just can’t help but bop along too. And that’s just how a Panto should be, in my opinion.

With a huge cast of 30, the show creates a fabulously interactive atmosphere with little ones delighted to shout and boo whilst the older ones enjoy a lively sing-a-long (and lots of naughty jokes that fly over the heads of the younger viewers, but provide endless laughs for the adults!)

My favourite cast member this year is the beastie of the story – but he’s not actually The Beast and he’s not a traditional vile-looking villain, in fact he is gorgeous (but beastly in his misogyny and vanity).  It was Flash Harry, (the Gaston character in the Disney versions of the story), who is played excellently by Danny Bayne. He fits his role perfectly and I loved his own number – which was a version of Jim Croce’s 1973 hit Leroy Brown. Actually, speaking of cast ‘numbers’, I also loved May’s ‘Legend’ tribute which (I think) was a version of Flash, Bang Wallop from Half a Sixpence. Brilliant!

Like any good panto, the narrative of the tale is sprinkled with lots of funny moments in between. Or perhaps you could say the tale is told between lots of funny moments – some of which make you ask yourself, ‘was that meant to happen?’; but whichever way you look at it, there is exactly the right mix of light-hearted entertainment that families of all ages will enjoy.

I’m delighted to say that after 6 years visiting the panto, Valentina finally had a ‘penny drop’ moment this year and just ‘got’ May. I mean, she’d laughed at her before and knew May was a he, who looks ridiculously funny in her costumes (this year’s Mrs Incredible is THE BUSINESS!) but she really understands now that May is integral to the Panto, that she holds it all together and is responsible for all, or most, of the comedy in it. Her favourite bit was the Twelve days of Christmas, and she now understands that that’s a regular thing, which is so very funny because of its unexpectedness. Of course now she is hailing out ‘FIIIIIIVE TOILET ROOOOOOLLLLS!’ non-stop and is dying to meet May, but that day will come, I hope.

Will you love it? Oh yes you will!

FITNESS AND HEALTH | LET’S TALK ABOUT DRINK, BABY

Since stepping into my 40s I have become much more health-conscious and aware of what I put onto (and into) my body.  I’m not one for regrets, but if I were to have any, it would be some of the reckless things I did to my body in my twenties – like globetrotting across hot countries with low or no sun protection on my skin, plus smoking socially (thank the Lord I never smoked full time) and lastly, the amount of alcohol I used to drink – and the level of drunkenness that that would cause in me - at weekends. Thank the Lord (again) that there was no social media back then, to witness the devastation.

In those supposed carefree (but oftentimes careless) days in my twenties, I had some of the most fun and memorable life experiences. Coming from a big family, I am a very social being; and while I worked hard and played hard, I just loved being with people. As drinking was definitely much more ingrained in my culture and in my generation, that often meant attending parties and other social occasions where it was quite widely accepted that everyone would be sh*tfaced by the end of the evening. Binge drinking at weekends was the norm.

This is not good, and many people my age are changing their lifestyles to redress the balance of heavier or more sustained binge drinking at a younger age. I for one will only drink occasionally now. I am informed and make delicious alcohol choices which I enjoy – like a Shortcross and a good tonic with a slice of orange; or a delicious glass of red with Sunday lunch - but just not to excess. I know quite a few people my age – and younger - who didn’t get off the party bus and it has taken its toll on their mental and physical health as well as relationships, careers and financial situation. So let’s get sober & take a look at alcohol. Let’s talk about drink, baby.

Alcohol’s impact on your body starts from the moment you take your first sip. While an occasional glass of wine with dinner isn’t a cause for concern, the cumulative effects of drinking wine, beer, or spirits can take its toll. In short, long term casual drinking carries some long term risks and causes long term damage – and that’s a fact.

A glass a day may do little damage to your overall health. But if the habit grows or if you find yourself having a hard time stopping after just one glass, the cumulative effects can add up. The NHS recommends that both men and women should not drink more than 14 units a week (a small glass of wine is roughly 1.5 units).

Here are just a few of the physiological effects of alcohol on your body:

 Pancreatitis Risk…

Drinking too much alcohol can cause abnormal activation of digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas. Build-up of these enzymes can lead to inflammation known as pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can become a long-term condition and cause serious complications.

Inflammatory Liver Damage

With the exception of the brain, the liver is the most complex organ in the body. We know that drinking is very hard on this crucial organ, which helps break down and remove harmful substances from your body, including alcohol, but some alcohol-related liver diseases aren’t always reversible and can sometimes be deadly.

Long-term alcohol use interferes with the liver’s detoxing processes. It also increases your risk for chronic liver inflammation and liver disease. The scarring caused by this inflammation is known as cirrhosis. The formation of scar tissue destroys the liver. As the liver becomes increasingly damaged, it has a harder time removing toxic substances from your body.

Liver disease is life-threatening and leads to toxins and waste build up in your body. Women are at higher risk for developing alcoholic liver disease. Women’s bodies are more likely to absorb more alcohol and need longer periods of time to process it. Women also show liver damage more quickly than men.

Sugar levels

The pancreas helps regulate your body’s insulin use and response to glucose. When your pancreas and liver aren’t functioning properly, you run the risk of experiencing low blood sugar, or hypo-glycemia. A damaged pancreas may also prevent the body from producing enough insulin to utilize sugar. This can lead to hyper-glycemia, or too much sugar in the blood. Note the difference HYPO vs HYPER.

If your body can’t manage and balance your blood sugar levels, you may experience greater complications and side effects related to diabetes. It’s important for people with diabetes or hypo-glycemia to avoid excessive amounts of alcohol.

Central nervous system

One of the easiest ways to understand alcohol’s impact on your body is by understanding how it affects your central nervous system. Slurred speech is one of the first signs you’ve had too much to drink. Alcohol can reduce communication between your brain and your body. This makes coordination more difficult. You may have a hard time balancing. You should never drive after drinking.

As alcohol causes more damage to your central nervous system, you may experience numbness and tingling sensations in your feet and hands.

Drinking also makes it difficult for your brain to create long-term memories. It also reduces your ability to think clearly and make rational choices. Over time, frontal lobe damage can occur. This area of the brain is responsible for emotional control, short-term memory, and judgement, in addition to other vital roles.

Chronic and severe alcohol abuse can also cause permanent brain damage. This can lead to Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, a brain disorder that affects memory.

Dependency

Some people who drink heavily may develop a physical and emotional dependency on alcohol. Alcohol withdrawal can be difficult and life-threatening. You often need professional help to break an alcohol addiction. As a result, many people seek medical detoxification to get sober. It’s the safest way to ensure you break the physical addiction. Depending on the risk for withdrawal symptoms, detoxification can be managed on either an outpatient or inpatient basis.

Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal include:

·         anxiety

·         nervousness

·         nausea

·         tremors

·         high blood pressure

·         irregular heartbeat

·         heavy sweating

·         Seizures, hallucinations, and delirium may occur in severe cases of withdrawal.

Digestive system

The connection between alcohol consumption and your digestive system might not seem immediately clear. The side effects often only appear after there has been damage. And the more you drink, the greater the damage will become.

Drinking can damage the tissues in your digestive tract and prevent your intestines from digesting food and absorbing nutrients and vitamins. As a result, malnutrition may occur. Heavy drinking can also lead to:

·         gassiness

·         bloating

·         a feeling of fullness in your abdomen

·         diarrhea or painful stools

For people who drink heavily, ulcers or haemorrhoids (due to dehydration and constipation) aren’t uncommon. And they may cause dangerous internal bleeding. Ulcers can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated early.

People who consume too much alcohol may also be at risk for cancer. People who drink frequently are more likely to develop cancer in the mouth, throat, easophagus, colon, or liver. People who regularly drink and use tobacco together have a greater cancer risk.

Circulatory system

Alcohol can affect your heart and lungs. People who are chronic drinkers of alcohol have a higher risk of heart-related issues than people who do not drink. Women who drink are more likely to develop heart disease than men who drink.

Circulatory system complications include:

·         high blood pressure

·         irregular heartbeat

·         difficulty pumping blood through the body

·         stroke

·         heart attack

·         heart disease

·         heart failure

Difficulty absorbing vitamins and minerals from food can cause anaemia. This is a condition where you have a low red blood cell count. One of the biggest symptoms of anaemia is fatigue.

Sexual and Reproductive Health

You may think drinking alcohol can lower your inhibitions and help you have more fun in bed. But the reality is quite different. Men who drink too much are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction. Heavy drinking can also prevent sex hormone production and lower your libido.

Women who drink too much may stop menstruating. That puts them at a greater risk for infertility. Women who drink heavily during pregnancy have a higher risk of premature delivery, miscarriage, or stillbirth.

Women who drink alcohol while pregnant put their unborn child at risk. Foetal alcohol syndrome disorders (FASD) is a serious concern. Other conditions include:

·         learning difficulties

·         long-term health issues

·         increased emotional problems

·         physical development abnormalities

·         Skeletal and muscle systems

Long-term alcohol use may prevent your body from keeping your bones strong. This habit may cause thinner bones and increase your risk for fractures if you fall. And factures may heal more slowly.

Drinking alcohol may also lead to muscle weakness, cramping, and eventually atrophy.

Immune system

Drinking heavily reduces your body’s natural immune system. This makes it more difficult for your body to fight off invading germs and viruses.

People who drink heavily over a long period of time are also more likely to develop pneumonia or tuberculosis than the general population. About 10% of all TB cases worldwide can be tied to alcohol consumption. Drinking alcohol also increases your risk for several types of cancer, including mouth, breast, and colon.

 The NHS website also lists these side effects – some solely physical, others emotional and much wider-reaching…  

Mood

Consuming alcohol can make us feel more confident – it comes as no surprise that people often have first dates in a place where alcohol is served, and party animals come to life with a few cocktails on board, but did you know that consuming alcohol actually numbs our emotions? It depresses the central nervous system leading to mood fluctuations and, over time, it can actually change your brain chemistry for the worse, causing feelings of depression. In the short term, it can cause irritability and anger issues. That tiredness & difficulty sleeping you feel after alcohol (sometimes in the days after)? That’s the chemical make up being affected by alcohol.

Relationships

A sad fact is that alcohol misuse is one of the leading contributors to family and relationship breakups. Over time and often without realising, behaviour can change and drinkers can become aggressive, angry and violent. Families are forced to watch loved ones change and self-loathing can cause drinkers to drink even more.

Brain Box

The British Medical Journey did a study which showed that excessive drinking doesn’t just make you impulsive (hello, bad choices) it also affects your intelligence… Think of all those brain cells depleting as you chug your endless beers…

Beauty & the Beast

There is a general consensus in the skincare industry that alcohol is one of the worst things to destroy your skin – think wrinkles, acne, dehydratiom, dark circles and even hair loss – NO THANKS!

The C Word

Another scary fact from the NHS is that alcohol misuse can actually increase your risk of developing certain cancers including liver, bowel, mouth and breast cancer. YIKES.

What can you do?

The easiest way to avoid those frightening long-term effects of alcohol is to drink less. Don’t drink more than the recommend weekly amount, and, limit excessive drinking.

I try to drink water between alcoholic drinks when I’m out, because not only does it improve a hangover, but it is also giving your body a break in between drinks and avoids dehydration.

If you drink to avoid feeling down, then talk to someone - a friend, family member or someone you trust. Go for a walk or do something active – drinking will only make you feel worse in the long run. If you feel you may have an alcohol problem speak to a professional, there is lots of help available, remember - you are not alone.

FOOD | MAKE IT SPECIAL WITH A GIFT FROM BISCUITEERS

Although each year I yearn to be one of those smug people who have their Christmas shopping complete by the end of summer, it is just not something I have ever been able to do. FOLIO | DRIVING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS AT THE LYRIC

Driving home for Christmas tells the story of a group of people who end up snowed in on Christmas Eve. Their refuge is the Dander Inn - not quite the cosy pub in the country you might first imagine, but instead a run down establishment owned by ageing (and slightly creepy) twins Pat & Paddy, who offer a less than warm welcome to the hapless visitors.

The stranded travellers make an unlikely group; there is smart, middle-aged Alison, who supplies Catholic religion goods for a living, a BT9er and his fiancée who are going to spend Christmas with her culchie family, as well as the male members of an Abba tribute band who all stumble upon the shabby shack deep in the Sperrin mountains in look of shelter.

Comic duo and writers Conor Grimes and Alan McKee play the oddball brother and sister (as well as musician Frank) and switch between the characters seamlessly, whilst Frankie McCafferty returns as director and keeps the plot running smoothly.

Gary Crossan puts on an energetic performance as pompous Rudy and as we listen to him drone on about his own self-importance, we can’t help but wonder why his long-suffering fiancée Ciara, played by Ruby Campbell, has agreed to marry him. Campbell’s performance as the lovely nurse Ciara is excellent and her solo performance in the second half was a definite highlight of mine.

Ali White plays Alison who tells the group the sorrowful tale of her husband struggling with Christmas preparations back at home. I would have loved for her character to be a little more developed as I found her rather basic (the wife away whilst her husband yearns for her at home in order to help with Christmas preparations seems a little dated to me personally), especially when played by an actress as talented as Ali White.

I did love watching rough and ready Frank from the tribute act, played by Alan Mckee (who excels in his dual role) as well as his fellow musician who speaks little preferring to quietly slip into the corner and play a piano.

The Bullseye sketch was one of my favourites and a great opportunity to show off just how talented the cast really are. Stuart Marshall’s creative set gives some subtle clues to the dark twist ahead and the bacon fries on offer are a nice nod to Belfast.

Fans of the Godfather will love the clever reference in one particular scene; in fact there are a few classic film & TV references as well as some great musical numbers with clever lyrical changes.

The incongruous characters and witty script were great but I couldn’t help but think it could have been taken a little further. My laughs seemed fewer than previous years and some scenes left me slightly cringing rather than laughing but as the laughs roared around me, it is fair to say not everyone felt this way. Perhaps the standard of Grimes and McKee’s ‘Nativity… What the Donkey Saw’ made my expectations a little too high but I just couldn’t help but leave feeling a little underwhelmed. However friends of mine went to the see the play and raved about it – so it is definitely worth checking out.

In order to better safeguard the environment, Dior offers refillable bottles and jars within its Capture Totale, Dior Prestige and L’Or de Vie ranges.

Another brand committed to limiting their impact on the environment is L’Occitane, who have cut down on excessive holiday packaging. In a bid to minimise the amount of packaging materials, the company reduced its use of cardboard by over 31,000 kilograms in this year’s Christmas range!

The brand has never used plastic bags preferring paper bags instead and this year they have also ensured all its wrapping paper is made from recycled and recyclable materials.

FACE | AUTUMN-WINTER BEAUTY FIXES

I like to step up my skincare regime at this time of year when the shift between a centrally heated office or cosy fireside and the crisp outdoors can really take its toll on delicate skin, causing dryness, dehydration or irritation. Regular readers know by now that I’m a fan of hydration from within first and foremost – so firstly, top up on your H2O, and drink plenty of veggie-heavy winter soups to keep the nutrients coming in. As well as this, gently nourishing oils and creams can make a marked difference in days... add a couple of these beauty fixes to your AW regime and your hair and skin will thank you later.

My cold weather skincare regime is a little more luxe than usual, with the addition of rich cleansing balms, treatment serums and hydrating masks. DRY, CRISPY LOCKS

If central heating and icy winds leave your locks feeling stripped and crunchy, a weekly mask helps restore hair health. CROCODILE SHINS

We've all been there and know the drill. Scaly shins ain't sexy and should be slathered with a sumptuous rich body cream nightly to restore silky smoothness. Weekly exfoliation helps slough off any dead skin cells so that cream can really sink in and get to work. I am not a big fan of harsh exfoliators so I love the Yonka sugar scrubs which are gentle to the skin. They feel luxurious and melt into a milky texture when you add water, leaving skin feeling super soft.

If you're anything like me, a divinely scented product will help encourage you to do this on repeat (it really only takes a minute!). I'm a fan of  L'Occitane Milk Concentrate with Almond Milk and The Body Shop Body Butters are fantastic. NB these two body care steps are essential if you're an all year round self tanner.

Dry brushing is important and wonderful for exfoliating dry winter skin, leaving skin looking polished and fresh. It also helps detoxify by increasing blood circulation and promoting lymph flow and drainage so try and add this into your skin routine.  

The Body Shop do a great range and are made with a wooden handle making them much better for the environment. They also have one with a small handle making it easy to use.

FASHION | The Day Bag Ed

What each of us look for in a day bag varies enormously depending on our lifestyle - and if you're anything like me, which day of the week it is! In this edit I've included five of the biggest day bag trends for 2019, in a mix of styles that should allow everyone to tick at least one box.

From belt bags for hands-free fans - mums, dog walkers et al - to large roomy totes for those of us who like to lug a laptop, spare shoes and full day's worth of snacks around with us. And probably a makeup bag. And several kids' toys, just in case. You get the picture...

As budgets also vary as widely as our needs, I've included both designer and budget alternatives of each style. NB these aren't really intended to be dupes - just similar, more affordable options.

 1. THE SHEARLING

It started with teddy coats and shearling boots - and now handbags are following suit. Cosy up and add a touch of softness to your day with strokable shearling, faux fur and snuggly textiles spotted everywhere from Chanel to Dries Van Noten. There are tonnes to choose from on the High Street... M&S also has a more roomy version in ginger for £25.

 2. THE LARGE TOTE

Next: £72

These need no explanation as no-one can argue with the virtues of a roomy tote. As well as being endlessly useful on a working day, I love to chuck my phone and purse into one when I'm going clothes shopping. Any opportunity to say no to plastic bags - plus it looks and feels so much better! The Tom Ford is to die for, but I really think this leather Next version looks way more expensive than its price tag.

 3. THE LUXE CROC EFFECT

Elevate any look with croc accessories (I prefer faux) to add instant polish. Check out 2019's version of Chloe's first ever cult bag, the Paddington, once spotted on the arm of every supermodel and It girl... and instantly recognisable with its logo padlock. Who remembers how heavy these were?! The Aby is more chic, structured and the perfect medium sized bag. Kurt Geiger's Carvela alternative is also super stylish.

 4. THE BAGUETTE

Another throwback - this time from the 90s - heralded by the return of the swoony Fendi baguette. Ideal for the minimalist among you who carry only a purse, phone and lipstick in their bag (hands free shopping anyone?). Looks just as good tucked under the arm of a cosy knit as it does evening wear. I'm happy to say that this style is widely available on the High Street, with Zara and ASOS turning up some excellent designs. The Fendi is available in a rainbow of colours, including the original logo print and striking gold metallic.

 5. THE BELT BAG

For an even more pared back effect, go completely hands free with a belt bag. AKA bum bag, waist bag, fanny pack... I'll stick with belt bag thanks! A forever favourite with dads and globetrotters, Prada has taken this trend to another level - and everyone is following suit. Pair with jeans and a chunky knit for running errands that require both hands; use to cinch in your waist for a more fitted silhouette or wear cross body at chest level if you're uber cool (and less well endowed than me).  

 Multibagging (wearing two or more bags at once) is also a thing now, so if the challenge of choosing gets too much, you're sorted!

FASHION | COOL KICKS

Remember when we thought it was radical to switch heels for trainers on the daily commute? Today a dress/suit/ball gown + trainers = standard... and I love that. Been doing it for years (and I have to say, been teased for it too, before the same people started doing it to…)  

Anyhoo, with fabulous sneakers spotted at Louboutin, Valentino and Chloe - trust me - this street style is sticking around! And if you want to get in on the action, it's totally possible to make your off-duty look a fashion statement with my round up of the best kicks of the season.

So is it really possible to combine comfort and cool? Absolutely! Choose from sporty, street style or statement - and pair with whatever the hell you like. Mixing fashion and function is always a winner, so athleisure is a staple look for me... hectic days require comfort and I often sport gym gear or gorgeous leggings (anyone else tried and loved the SPANX leather look ones yet?!) plus sneakers while on the go. I also love pairing trainers with dresses and tailored trousers for an effortlessly stylish vibe and a welcome change from my business heels.

So what's everyone wearing on the streets of Belfast and beyond?! Local fashionistas can be seen in Golden Goose, Veja and Vans, while those not afraid to step up the style stakes don something a little more out there, with in-your-face chunky platform styles.

Believe it or not, I’ve only been to the Christmas Market once. I despise queueing and am not a fan of beer, nor indeed any drink from a plastic glass, so the bar was never a draw despite legendary tales of craic galore from so many friends and family. However I am drawn to gifts galore and delicious international foods including French crêpes, Belgian chocolates and mulled cider, all served up alongside fantastic quality produce from local artisan food and craft producers. Kids can visit Santa in his festive grotto, ride on the vintage carousel or slide down the Helter Skelter. Actually come to think of it those last two would make for great Instagram backdrops or props!

It's always fascinated me that the earth's hardest, most durable substance is also one of the most precious, rare and beautiful. Until the middle of the twentieth century, there was no agreed-upon standard by which diamonds could be judged. The first - now globally accepted standard for describing diamonds - is colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. Today, the 4Cs of diamond quality is the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond, anywhere in the world.

COLOUR: The colour evaluation of most gem-quality diamonds is actually based on the absence of colour. A chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond has no hue, like a drop of pure water, and consequently, a higher value. Many colour distinctions are so subtle that they are invisible to the untrained eye, but make a very big difference in diamond quality and price.

CLARITY: Natural diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in the earth. This process can result in a variety of characteristics called 'inclusions' and external characteristics called 'blemishes.' Evaluating diamond clarity involves determining the number, size, relief, nature and position of these characteristics - and how they affect the overall appearance of the stone. While no diamond is perfectly pure, the closer it comes, the higher its value.

CARAT: Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weighs; a metric 'carat' is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat can be subdivided into 100 'points', allowing very precise measurements to the hundredth decimal place. While diamond price generally increases with carat weight, two diamonds of equal carat weight can have very different values  depending on their clarity, colour, and cut.

CUT: We often think of a diamond's cut as shape (round, emerald, pear), but its cut grade is really about how well a diamond's facets interact with light. Precise artistry and workmanship are required to fashion a stone so that its proportions, symmetry and polish deliver the magnificent return of light only possible in a diamond. The quality of cut is crucial to the diamond's final beauty and value - and is the most complex and technically difficult element to analyse.
