FACE | SELF TAN: MY TOP TEN TAN TIPS

It may be September, but it’s still Legs Out season and these days, I like to tan safely and fake my glow. If applied well, no-one will know it's faux... today I'm sharing my Top Ten self tanning tips to keep things smooth, seamless and golden!

Good preparation is key to an even, long lasting self tan...

1. Exfoliate the night before to remove dead skin cells, get rid of dry patches and leave skin soft, smooth and ready for application. This will also help your tan last longer as you're less likely to shed it with dry skin. Nice!  My current fave is Soap & Glory Breakfast Scrub and not just because it smells good enough to eat, though Clinique Sparkle Skin and the new Yonka body scrubs are gorgeous if you fancy something a little more luxurious.

2. Defuzz legs a day (or at least a few hours) in advance if possible. I’m mostly lasered, but still have some hair which I usually take off with a razor. Shaving leaves my skin feeling sensitive and self tan stings if I apply it to freshly shaved skin, so I prefer to do this the day before and avoid unsightly rashes. Pre-holiday, I usually wax to get really clear skin, and then I wait at least 24 hours before applying tan.

3. Moisturise areas that are particularly prone to dryness, concentrating on knees, ankles, feet,  elbows and hands. If you're applying body lotion all over, do it at least an hour in advance to give it time to absorb and avoid it diluting or interfering with the tan. Simple, unperfumed formulas work best - try Aveeno for super soft skin or the NUXE body oil. If you don’t like the idea of waiting, think of all the ways you can multi task and use the time to catch up on emails or reading, or an episode of your fave TV show. Or you could give yourself a mani/pedi/facemask of course!

Almost ready, remember...

4. Always apply self tan in front of a full length mirror. Trust me, it's way easier to make sure application is even if you can see every angle in a mirror and check you haven't missed any bits.

5. Cover the floor. Self tan has a habit of splattering across the bathroom unexpectedly - been there, lost a new bath mat to it. (And that was after several bed sheets and cream bedroom carpet got ruined with splashes!)

6. Use a tanning mitt. Tangoed palms are not a good look and the product will spread much more quickly and evenly with a mitt.

Application

7. Shake the bottle well before you begin (again half way through if it's a mousse). Apply product onto the mitt, not your body, and blend completely before moving on to the next section.

8. Apply lightly around dry areas such as knees, ankles, elbows and wrists, hands and feet, where remains of product left on the mitt should be sufficient.

9. Check backs of arms, elbows, knees and ankles in mirror to spot streaks or missed bits.

10. Using a clean mitt or cotton pad, gently buff skin around 'the edges': hairline, under jaw, wrists, ankles, fingers, toes, knees and elbows. This only takes a minute and helps avoid excess product gathering.

Which Self Tan?

This completely depends on your skin colour and whether you're a beginner or not. I find mousse formulas particularly easy to work with and always use self tan with a tint as I can see which bits are blended in - and check I haven't missed or over-tanned any bits! I always recommend gradual tanners for beginners - essentially a body lotion with a little self tan added in, these are the most foolproof to apply and add a subtle wash of colour.

Here are my tried & tested favourites...

My No1 self tan is He-Shi Dark Foaming Mousse (also available in Medium). This is so quick and easy to apply, gives beautifully even bronzed limbs and lasts around a week, fading evenly. Disclosure: I am a He-Shi ambassador, but it is my tan OF CHOICE and they asked me to come on board because I was already a fan, so I haven’t been paid nor persuaded to say this!  

If I'm in a rush, I'll reach for He-Shi Rapid One Hour Liquid Tan, which does exactly what it says on the bottle. Both give an instant (wash off) tint that makes me look (and feel) better immediately.  

While these can also be used on the face, I like a quick spritz of Tan-Tastic Ultimate Rapid Spray Tan across my face as it's just so quick and easy to use.

If I'm getting my legs out or wearing a revealing dress, I use Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body or Vita Liberata Body Blur for a skin enhancing glow and dust a little Too Faced Chocolate Gold Soleil Bronzer (made with read gold) to highlight cheekbones, shoulders and collar bone.

FACE (AND BEAUTY) | LASER HAIR REMOVAL @ THERAPIE CLINIC

I’m halfway there with my laser hair removal at Therapie Clinic, which has branches across Ireland, and I have to say I love it!

Not having to worry about shaving or waxing bikini lines and underarms is such a godsend and alleviates any drama or embarrassment – because I was one of those people who was embarrassed about body hair previously.

Having a thick head of hair like mine is amazing for hair styling and upstyles, but the downside of a thick head of hair is usually a healthy growth of hair elsewhere. Thankfully I am not the owner of a dark upper lip ‘tache, but I might have been had I not invested in the first days of IPL almost 20 years ago. Back then I started the process to have my bikini line, full leg, upper lip, underarm and chin all done. It’s a big investment so it took me a few years to do it, starting as soon as I could afford it and some of the areas treated then remain hair free (or almost hair free) and so they just need a wee topping up really.

Last year I went to Beyond Skin in Fountain Lane for a few underarm and bikini sessions and started to see some improvement on the small patches remaining from back then.  In fact, having had four sessions there, my underarm hair is now completely zapped thanks to them. This year I was invited along to Therapie’s new clinic in Ann Street to have a full Hollywood laser on my bikini line – including the undercarriage, eeeks! - and I thought, ok, let’s do this! You see, I remember back in 2003 when I was writing for ACCENT magazine I did one of the first reviews of the Hollywood bikini wax in Belfast – and at the time I was shocked to learn that the biggest users of the treatment were women in their 40s and beyond, who didn’t want to see any greys down there. I hadn’t even thought about that! (40 seemed so old to me then (*eyeroll*). Reminiscing back to that time, I guessed I would take Therapie up on their offer so I got my bikini hairs zapped before they potentially turned white like those ladies’ back almost two decades ago.  

I’ll not go through the process in too much detail, but instead I want to outline the benefits of the treatment and some FAQs for anyone considering. Have a read and let me know what you think – have you had it done? Did I cover all bases here?

BENEFITS:

• Laser Hair Removal is a safe and effective way of removing unwanted hair, permanently. Thérapie Clinic (and Beyond Skin before them, last year) use only medical grade lasers, which are both safe and effective for long-lasting hair removal.

• A course of treatments is needed as laser only works on hair that is in the growth phase of the hair cycle, known as Anagen. The other two phases of the hair cycle, called Catagen and Telogen, mean the hair is either dormant or falling out; so the laser doesn’t impact it. As all of your hair is in different phases at different times, you will need several treatments spread out over a number of weeks to ensure the laser ‘catches’ each of the hairs in their growth phase at some point.

• The number of treatments is also different for everyone and it is dependent on the area being treated; how thick and dense the hair is and your skin type

• Most areas of the body can be treated for unwanted hair, including underarms, Brazilian or Hollywood style, as well as the face (including the sides, brow, jawline and neck), forearms, back, stomach, nipples, hands and feet.

•  Laser Hair Removal is incredibly effective in terms of the longevity of the desired effect and the potential reduction of overall hair growth

THIS IS WHY IT TAKES 8-12 SESSIONS

Whenever there is hair on your body there are three phases of growth: telogen, anagen and catagen phases. Some hairs are resting, some are growing and some are falling out.

‘Depending on what cycle of growth they are in, the hair responds differently to lasers, says Dr Seukeran. ‘You could treat on set of hair and it will respond quickly because it’s in the growing or falling out phase. Others might not respond because they’re in the resting phase.’

It is because of these different stages that the treatment takes 8-12 sessions, between 6-8 weeks apart, to complete and catch 90% of hair in its active phase.

 Some FAQs:

What is the difference between IPL and Laser?

Lasers are most selective and more effective at absorbing into melanin meaning fewer treatments are required. They penetrate deeper to specifically target hair structures; whereas IPLs typically do not. Lasers have more advanced cooling systems, which means your treatments are made as comfortable as possible for you.

What happens first? The Consultation

If you’re interested in laser hair removal, you should book yourself in for a free consultation in Therapie. During the consultation, they will examine the area that you wish to have lasered. You need to leave a certain amount of hair there that isn’t shaved or waxed. This is so that they can examine how light or dark your hair is. The darker the hair and the paler your skin – the better chance you have for successful long term results. The one thing to bear in mind is that there is a chance that hair removal may not be an option for you – this could be for a number of different reasons. If your hair is too fine or blonde, or you have certain underlying medical conditions. That’s the great thing about the free consultation though, they’ll be completely transparent about what will and what won’t work for you, so you can decide what you want to spend your money on. They will also do a patch test which will test how your skin reacts to the lasers – make sure to take note if anything seems out of the ordinary here.

Is it safe for your skin?

Laser is a clinically tested treatment; it’s fully FDA approved and has undergone rigorous trails to ensure patient safety and efficacy. All of the Therapie Clinic laser therapists are highly trained in performing the treatments; they take client comfort and safety very seriously and use the highest grade medical lasers. Before starting a course of treatment, they give each client a free consultation and patch test with a 3 day waiting period to ensure skin is safe and patch test is clear. If you are having treatments with them and happen to go on holiday throughout your treatment course we will ask that you will have another patch test when you return to ensure your skin is ready to resume treatment without the risk of pigmentation occurring.

The Process

Before your first laser appointment, make sure to have absolutely no natural or fake tan on your body. You will get a course of at least 6 treatments for the area, these will generally be every 6-8 weeks. After your treatment, make sure to keep your skin cool as it will be sensitive. Avoid hot showers, exercise and tight clothes. Your skin will feel irritated and sticky from the gel that is put on it during the treatment but it’s short-lived so don’t worry.

One thing you need to absolutely avoid before, during and after your treatment is waxing. Waxing pulls the hair out of the follicle, and this is what the lasers are working to break downed reduce, so waxing essentially means you will have to start over. Therapie recommend sticking with laser hair removal until you achieve the results that you are after

Does it hurt?

Therapie clinics use the latest in laser hair removal technology: Cynosure, above. Cynosure machines are FDA approved and proven to be the most advanced technology in the industry. Other laser clinics are still using outdated machines, which can be more painful and generally require more sessions to see results.
Cynosure lasers safely deliver superior results and faster treatment times, making side effects minimal, with amazing results.

Billed as a completely pain-free hair removal solution, the machine uses both a laser and a chilling effect with the idea being that you don’t even feel the heat of the laser as it does its thing. The cooler doesn’t completely mask the very slight nipping of the laser – I mean, you’re still blasting three different wavelengths of medical-grade laser at your lady bits – but your therapist can easily switch off the laser for an extra bit of cooling the second you feel any discomfort. Personally I didn’t find it that uncomfortable at all. Nippy? Yes, but bearable and not even a quarter of the pain of a wax – be that underarm, upper lip or bikini.

You can expect some slight regrowth once your sessions are finished, with most therapists recommending an annual visit to keep on top of that. (I hadn’t had to come annually at all, maybe five or more years between top ups – way more on my underarms!)

What is the aftercare like?

Your skin will be sensitive so you’re advised to refrain from hot showers/baths, steam rooms, saunas, swimming pool and exercise for 24-48hrs.

• Don’t use sun beds on the area or expose the area to direct sunlight at all while having laser.

• Don’t use perfumed products or thick creams for 48hrs.

• Don’t wear tight clothes like skinny jeans or nylon tights (if having your legs treated) for 48hrs, as they may cause friction and aggravate recently treated skin.

All of the above may cause skin to become irritated in the treated area, it is important that you follow these guidelines to ensure your skin safety. Your therapist will give you further details.

How long can you leave in between sessions?

It’s best to leave anywhere from 6-7 weeks per session. It is recommended that you make sure that your six sessions are done within the timeframe that Therapie recommend, this is the best way to ensure you get the best possible results within your hair regrowth cycle.

How much does it cost?

My treatment was gifted for review, but the clinic website has a menu of costs and there are always deals on at Therapie. You can even phone and ask what deals there are and they will honour them over the phone!

and shaving in between. After each treatment, the hair growth will decrease by about 30%, so this really is a dramatic decrease in my opinion and in my experience.

Top Ups – I have gotten a handful of top ups for my bikini and lip. As these are hormonal areas, it comes with the territory unfortunately. Please note oral contraceptives can affect hair growth even with laser in these areas, so ask the experts when you are in. Also, sometimes if you are on certain medications, this can have an effect on hair growth too.

FACE| SIGNATURE SUMMER SCENTS

I adore introducing new fragrances as the seasons change, particularly in Summer when a certain scent will forever bring back memories of a special occasion or travel destination. (Bougainvillea and Magnolia always remind me of France and Italy, while citrus-y scents remind me of Spain…) There's something so delicious about spritzing perfume on warm skin before heading out for the evening. From daytime florals to heady evening scents, take your pick from my menu of six gorgeous new scents for Summer 2019. All can be picked up at usual perfumeries, department stores or duty free.

Boucheron Orange de Bahia

For a touch of true luxury, this citrus aromatic fragrance for women and men emanates Brazilian sunshine and is both zesty and sweet. An opening of orange and green mandarin essence leads on to notes of rose, fig leaf and amber woods.

TOCCA Stella

With notes of blood orange and spicy lily, TOCCA Stella is both flirty and sensual. We all know we’re supposed to use it, yet so many of us still skip sunscreen. If you’re young, count yourself lucky that we’re so much more clued up about UV damage these days and start using SPF today. We may not be able to turn back time, and of course it’s good to get a dose of Vitamin D when we can, but all of us can take a moment to protect our skin and help prevent further damage.

If you do like a tan, fake it with my favourite, He-Shi – so many products right across the range - and/or add a few drops of Tan Luxe or Clarins tanning drops to your regular moisturiser for a golden glow on the face. 

5 reasons to slather on sunscreen - rain, hail or shine ...

1. Depletion of the ozone layer has increased our risk of damage from ultra violet rays.

2. Not a single ray of sun is required for skin damage to occur; UV rays are out in force every day, every season (even here in the UK & Ireland!).

3. Sunscreen protects against skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in the UK & Ireland, accounting for 31% of all cancers.

4. Sunscreen is the most powerful anti-ageing product. There is zero point in spending a fortune on the best skincare around if you don't add sun protection, end of. And if you only use one product on your skin, it should be sunscreen.

5. Products containing retinol, liquid exfoliants and some serums leave skin particularly vulnerable to UV damage and must be paired with SPF50+.

Sun Facts

• Most sun damage is done in our youth. (Count yourself lucky if you didn't grow up when SPF4 was the norm like me. I used actual olive oil on my skin in my teens, eek!).

• You can't layer SPFs. Makeup with SPF15 + sunscreen with SPF30 = protection of SPF30, not 45. Only the highest factor counts.

• Broad spectrum means you are covered for both UVA and UVB protection.

• SPF should be reapplied every 2 hours (more often if swimming, although please also think of the environment and the water pollution you can cause, so try not to jump straight in after applying, then reapplying and so on…)

• Sunscreen may be water resistant but not waterproof - and should always be replenished after swimming.

• Sunscreen has a shelf life and must be replaced every Summer to work optimally.

• SPF rarely causes breakouts; not removing it properly does. It's designed to stay around, so double cleansing is advisable for complete removal.

I like to use a separate SPF for my face as these are usually non-comedogenic (won’t block pores), have a lighter texture for under make-up and offer higher protection.  Always extend your facial sunscreen down your neck and décolleté - both of which are very delicate and equally prone to sun damage. I also apply any excess to the backs of my hands, one of the first areas to show signs of ageing.

Which Sunscreen?

Choosing the best sun screen can be a bit of a minefield and with so many formulas available, it’s difficult to know where to start. Gone are the days of thick white creams that leave a white cast and greasy texture... facial SPFs are much more sophisticated now and as pleasurable to use as skincare. Speaking of which, SPF should be the last step in your skincare routine, directly before any makeup.

Note whether the active ingredients are chemical or physical sunscreens. Physical (often described as natural or mineral) sunscreens most commonly contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which provide a physical barrier on the skin that reflect UV rays. Chemical sunscreens contain chemicals, which protect the skin by interacting with and absorbing ultraviolet energy.

The Hawaii state legislature recently passed a bill to ban oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemicals found in most non-mineral sunscreen products. Studies show that these two chemicals have damaged Hawaii’s marine environment, causing coral bleaching and possible coral death. If the bill becomes law (in 2021), it will affect most chemical sunscreens sold in the United States and force manufacturers to reformulate or stop selling these products in Hawaii.

Suncare Favourites

While you’re probably used lashing on the SPF to help protect your skin over the summer, there’s more you can do to protect your skin against the sun: namely, antioxidants. Antioxidants are a great way to help neutralise the visible effects the sun may have on skin (such as dark spots and wrinkles), so picking products with antioxidants can go a long way.

 Just to give you a quick recap about just what exactly antioxidants do - free radicals (or as scientists call them, “reactive oxygen species”) form in our bodies from different causes, particularly UV rays. These molecules are missing an electron, so they scavenge around for one and in this process, they cause damage to other cells. This is where antioxidants come in to save the day. By “donating” an electron to free radicals, antioxidants manage to neutralize them and halt or minimize the damage.

One of my faves is Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract; it is often credited as the source behind the flawless complexions of the Japanese and green tea has long been known for its amazing health benefits. It’s also a potent antioxidant, making it a popular ingredient in skincare products like the IMAGE ORMEDIC Balancing Antioxidant Serum €70.50…

FACE | PRE HOLIDAY BEAUTY PREP FROM TOP TO TOE

FACE: HOLIDAY PREP LIKE A PRO, FROM HEAD TO TOE

 You've booked the holiday, sorted your outfits and now it's time for poolside prep. While I don't believe in arduous dieting to get bikini ready (pass the Tayto, please), some personal maintenance goes a long way to ensuring I'm good to go on arrival. For me, holidays = total relaxation, including a low maintenance beauty routine, though of course I want to look good while sipping my Cava sangria by the pool. Follow my pre holiday timeline on how to prep like a pro and arrive beach-ready at your destination. It goes without saying that not all of these are essential, but I've tried to include something for everyone!

TWO WEEKS TO GO

SMOOTH IT - Gently exfoliate your body every few days to slough off dead skin and prepare for tanning, whether real or faux. Your skin will feel softer, body lotion will absorb more easily and you'll avoid ingrown hairs. Try Sanctuary Salt Scrub for silky smooth limbs. I also have a great YONKA exfoliator shower crème if you prefer the creamier type.

READY STEADY TAN - If you're heading to hot climates, prep skin with a tan accelerating cream to boost melanin levels and help you tan more quickly with less chance of burning. I like Gatineau Tan Accelerating Lotion to help prepare for and prolong tanning in the sun.

HYDRATE - Apply a rich body lotion daily to nourish and hydrate those limbs that have been under wraps all Winter! Personally I love a Body Shop Body Butter – Pink Grapefruit, Mojito and Mango are my faves… But don’t forget drinking lots of water and eating a plant-rich diet hydrates your biggest organ from within too.

Hydrating hair should not be forgotten about either. Use a rich mask for a few hours before washing hair or an oil afterwards to deeply condition your locks before sun exposure. Personally I love the Bumble & Bumble overnight masque for damage repair and some good old coconut oil for afterwards.

ONE WEEK TO GO

CHOP CHOP - sun and seawater can lead to frazzled locks, so boost your hair with a trim before you go and use a rich conditioner while away.

BRAZILIAN (no, not that one) - Treat yourself to a Brazilian Blow dry - a deeply conditioning, smoothing blow dry that leaves hair looking extra silky for a couple of months post treatment. Worth every penny if you're frizz-prone and want to avoid blow drying in hot climates.

TRAVEL BEAUTY - Make sure you have all the beauty products you need to bring with you packed and ready, preferably in miniature form. Hopefully you'll need very little if you follow these tips!

48 HOURS TO GO

DE-FUZZ - Always remove hair before self-tanning to avoid patchiness, as the top layer of skin can be removed along with the hair. If waxing, be sure to leave at least 24-36 hours before tanning. Wear loose clothes on long haul flights to avoid redness and ingrown hairs, especially after a Brazillian!

THE BROWS HAVE IT - A brow tint adds definition and helps us look groomed even without makeup. Whether tinting and/or waxing, do this a couple of days before jetting off to allow skin time to settle before flying. Add in lashes if you're not going for extensions. I use Michelle in Holywood Brows near my home in Holywood. She is quite simply amazeballs.

GET GLOSSY - A gel mani & pedi means zero chips and waking up to immaculate nails every morning of your holiday, plus they look ultra glossy in the sunlight!

THE DAY BEFORE

Set aside a few hours the day before you jet off for beauty treatments with the shortest lasting power, to make the most of them while you're away.

LOVELY LASHES - The last thing you want is panda eyes after swimming and lash extensions offer the ultimate minimal maintenance. They instantly prettify and mean you wake up looking 'done' every darn day... and you can get away with no other eye makeup.  

LVL lashes are my second favourite option - a tint and lash perm that leaves lashes looking naturally long and curled, as if wearing mascara. They seem to work best if your lashes are already pretty good on their own; personally I prefer extensions for more of a wow factor, but Michelle from Holywood Brows does the best LVL Lashes if this is your choice.

GLOW ON - Don't DIY tan if you're not used to it... there's no hiding a streaky tan in a bikini. A spray tan ensures a seamless all over glow with no need to bake for hours in the scorching sun! I love a He-Shi spray tan for a perfectly even, skin-kind golden glow in a shade to suit your colouring. If you do decide to DIY, look out for our Tanning Tips feature coming soon.

Summer Ready Skin

With the lure of balmy days approaching, it's the perfect time of year to give post-Winter skin some much needed TLC. Months of skipping between bitterly cold elements and central heating had left my skin feeling dull and dehydrated, making me the perfect candidate for a facial.

I always find it reassuring when any kind of beauty treatment begins with a thorough consultation and within minutes, I knew my face was safe in the hands of Kristina, National Trainer for Image Skincare and Aesthetic Therapist at Renaissance Clinic in Dublin. Passionate about helping people achieve optimally healthy skin, she is one of the most knowledgeable and skilled skincare specialists I've met.

Kristina began by assessing my skin needs and concerns, discussing my existing routine in detail and analysing my skin before deciding which treatment would be appropriate for me. Her analysis included photographing my face with a Skin Scanner for a deeper look at issues invisible to the naked eye. My scan revealed some areas of pigmentation as well as dehydration, particularly around the under eye area. What was anticipated as a 6-12 month limited edition campaign back in 2015 grew into 4 years of continuous love and success for the Pippa For Blank Canvas Palette. FACE| REVIEW: ESPA NATURAL FACELIFT AT POWERSCOURT HOTEL AND SPA

PowersCourt is set in the grounds of a beautiful estate and driving in I was mesmerised by the gorgeous views across a wooded valley. Although it had only been 30 minutes since I had left Dublin, I could have been a thousand miles away from the bustling city as the fresh air and acres of Wicklow mountain greenery transported me to a much-welcomed place of peaceful tranquillity.

Inside the hotel doesn’t disappoint either. The first thing I noticed were the flowers. The really beautiful and rich displays were just like those in the lobbies of the Georges V or Hotel Costes in Paris. Think more is more, but in a very tasteful and elegant way.

As for the décor, everything marries together to create a lovely, relaxed ambiance. Wide, sweeping staircases are enveloped in the light of a plethora of chandeliers and vast windows mean you are only ever a step away from the spectacular view outside.  And speaking of outside, the hotel gardens flow from formal, well-thought out lawns journeying into the wooded valley as birch and beech trees stand tall protectively – waiting to provide some shaded sanctuary on a hot summer’s day.

Unfortunately, today was not that hot summer’s day so I quickly made my way back inside ready to be shown to my room. At this point it is impossible not to mention the staff, who were friendly and kind throughout my stay and always ready to offer some advice on the local offerings (of which there are many).

After quickly dropping my bags off at my room (think BIG, with a gorgeous balcony and mountain views, plus a Pretty Woman worthy bathroom and the ultimate work-station where I caught up on some emails later that evening, after the best night’s sleep in an extra-wide and super-soft bed of dreams – literally!) But first, my date and I visited the outstanding and world-renowned SIKA restaurant.

Now that experience deserves a review all of its own, but suffice to say, we enjoyed delectable dishes and a really great wine (chosen to match my amateur description of what I like) by the restaurant sommelier. I’ve included some pics in my video review.

But let’s talk about the spa – my main reason for visiting this really fabulous hotel. First impressions always count, right?! And the ESPA spa certainly makes for a good one. Set out over two floors, the spa houses an extremely well-equipped gym, pool (its floor is actually studded with Swarovski crystals, I kid you not), a café, relaxation room, hammam suite and SO many treatments on offer.

I opted for the ESPA Natural Face Lift spa treatment – a facial designed to make skin look and feel better. My (AMAZING) therapist talked me through the treatment and what to expect, before beginning with an eye and lip cleanse followed by a facial cleanse. She then performed a pleasantly surprising skin analysis using UV technology which highlights any particular concerns and allowed the therapist to choose the best products for my skin’s needs.

My skin was slightly dehydrated - no surprise there, given the time of year, plus the copious amount of travel I had done of late, plus too much coffee/not enough water and the fact that I had spent the day on a shoot in Dublin, so the studio lights won’t have helped either.

Next up, came the second cleanse which is actually accompanied by steam to warm the skin and muscles.  I could feel my pores opening to let all the badness out and the goodness get in! My therapist mixed some Tri-Active™ Advanced ProBiome serum with an ESPA face treatment oil (specific to my skin’s needs) before beginning the facial massage.  This actually consists of four stages that replicate a workout and I have to say it’s pretty full-on, but in a good way! The first is a detoxifying massage with clarifies and drains toxins, then an invigorating ‘Kobido’ massage comes next which activates circulation and brings fresh oxygen to the skin cells. This did feel a little odd as my skin was pushed (and lightly slapped/tapped) into all directions, but not at all uncomfortable. Jade rollers were then used to help smooth lines and wrinkles before my favourite part of the facial massage – the sculpt massage. This involves deep, slow techniques that lift and smooth fine lines, and left me feeling thoroughly relaxed! I’m pretty certain I dozed off at this point.

Next, a lifting and smoothing mask was applied to my face, neck and décolletage. Packed with peppermint and eucalyptus, the instantly cooling sensation felt incredible after the previous warming stages. As the mask did its work, my therapist treated me to a soothing scalp massage before peeling off and applying ProBiome serum, eye cream and moisturiser to finish. She then led my fresh-faced and thoroughly happy self to the relaxation room.

Catching a quick look in the mirror, my skin immediately looked more radiant and dare I say it, more youthful – and this workout was much more enjoyable than my usual body pump!

Checking out was a reluctant affair. I had had the most wonderful 24 hours and really didn’t want to leave. The hotel – and the spa – now hold some very special memories for me and I have already booked a return visit. The trip was gifted but as usual, I have not been paid nor persuaded to give certain opinions here, except my own honest ones. And I can honestly say that this hotel and the spa treatments are right up there with some of the best I’ve experienced in the world. So go on and get it booked. Because you’re worth it. Absolutely one hundred per cent worth it.

TEN OUT OF TEN FOR Q10 BY NIVEA

Although I embrace getting older and feel so much more body-confident now than I did 10 years ago, I do appreciate any help in avoiding further fine lines and a loss of elasticity as much as I can.  So when I received some of the new NIVEA Q10 POWER range products to try, I was more than a little intrigued to test them on my forty-something face.

 To launch the product range, the Nivea Ireland team also invited me to ask anything I wanted from the Nivea global product development expert Dr Dominik Goddertz.

Admittedly on trend skincare ingredients do come and go – but when it comes down to it, the nutrients which are already present in our skin are best and this range is so great because it replenishes what we already have. And with a promise to visibly smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the process, I was sold – I mean who doesn’t love the sound of that? Let’s find out what Dr Goddertz had to say on it:

Beauty Bitch: I think the best skincare is that which balances science and nature – you are so accomplished in science but tell me, how does NIVEA bring nature into its products?

Beiersdorf scientists came across Coenzyme Q10 already in the early 1990s and investigating its essential role in the energy metabolism of human skin cells was one of the major topics at Beiersdorf RnD. In 1998 Beiersdorf RnD Team succeeded in making skin’s own Coenzyme Q10 for the first time available for human skin by topical application. Since that time various new findings about Q10 and its regulation of the cellular energy metabolism led to continuous improvement of our Q10 skin care range. Beauty Bitch: And the latest range, what are the other core ingredients? And how can each of those benefit me as I reach my mid-forties?

Dr Dominik: Facial skin has a visibly different structure and different needs compared to body skin. Its epidermis is much thinner and more sensitive than body skin. Facial skin is more individual – some people tend to get very oily skin, others suffer from dry skin. It is put under high mechanical stress as we use our face a lot to communicate and express our feelings, what results in laughter lines and eye wrinkles. And of course, our facial skin is always exposed to external influences like heat, cold, and especially sunlight. The UVA rays from the sun have a long wavelength and go deep into the skin. These rays damage the skin’s collagen which results in wrinkles – about 85% of the wrinkles which appear in the face are caused in this way. Therefore, we offer our Q10 Power Day Products with sufficient sun protection. Its comprehensive UVA/UVB protection with SPF 15 guards your skin from the damaging effects of sunlight, which cause premature skin aging. My Verditct?

I have been using the new range for little over a week and I have noticed a considerable difference. My skin feels softer and definitely looks brighter (also any dark circles from late nights catching up on work after Easter holidays are long gone) and fine lines are visibly reduced.

I particularly love the sleeping melt-in mask which feels gorgeous to touch and glides onto skin, waking me up to a gorgeous glow – always great for busy mornings on the go when there is no time for makeup!

I’ve been applying the replenishing serum pearls before adding the anti-wrinkle day cream SPF 15 (it also comes in a pore-be-gone version for combination skin). I think I will upgrade this to an SPF 30 for summer as the sun’s rays intensify.

I can see the eye cream fast becoming a handbag essential and I have already found myself popping a little under the eye during the day to give me a little lift (and to keep new wrinkles at bay of course).

Overall, this does exactly what it promises to do and even the harshest of critics will be impressed. It’s easy to see how NIVEA is one of the nation’s most-loved skincare brands – maybe I will be following in my parents’ footsteps more often!

FACE | BESPOKE ENVIRON TREATMENT

It’s sunny and spring-like but still cold; and my lacklustre skin needed a boost of hydration and well as some glow, so I took up the invitation to go see Lisa at ENVY Aesthetic Skin Clinic in Crumlin for an Environ Hydraboost facial. It has been almost two years since I had this treatment (with lovely Claire Duff in Dunmurry) so it was great to get the opportunity to have another one, as I recall my skin looking (and feeling) pretty darn perfect last time.

  Formulated by Dr Des Fernandes, the world-renowned plastic surgeon, this intensive treatment already has an army of fans including Elle McPherson, and is said to be the perfect antidote to dehydrated skin – so it’s exactly what I needed. It is a deeply intensive facial but not bank-breaking, at £65. It hydrates, plumps and firms the skin, but be aware, this is more of a treatment than a ‘treat’. It’s definitely not one of those facials you lie back and relax during – the mask is thick and covers the eyes and lips, so you cant see or speak during it, but I actually found that quite liberating! Plus the glowing skin afterwards makes the masque worth it. 

 The products used contain a high percentage of Vitamin A which promotes the production of healthy collagen and elastin – helping to improve the appearance of fine lines as well as lightening pigmentation and improving skin tone. The whole range of Environ Skin Care is packed with powerful antioxidants that protect and nourish skin and, after a skin consultation, Lisa tailored the products to my own skin type.

 So – here goes:

We kick started with a dual action pre cleansing oil, a gentle plant oil based pre cleanser that helps dissolve excess surface oil whilst maintaining the natural acid level of the skin.  Lisa told me that he best thing to get rid of any pesky blackheads on my nose is to use oil products on there – a new tip for me, as I was avoiding adding oil to what is already an obvious build up of sebum, but Lisa’s theory sounds totally logical, so I am definitely going to try that from now on!

Next up, we used a botanical infused moisturising toner which contains special ingredients that work in synergy with the environ products to assist in moisturising the skin and improve the appearance of uneven skin tone. Then with double-cleansing done, it was time for the first of the treatment products to go on, and so Lisa added the A C E treatment gel which facilitates sonophoresis (that’s the ultrasound waves to you and me!).

 Next, an intensive hydrating serum which holds up to 1000 times its weight in water is applied over the face. Then, a ceramic wand is glided over the skin, using ultrasound waves to help the hydrating serum penetrate 4000 times deeper into the skin, than by application by hand. After this, there was a hydrating clay mask, which absorbs excess oils and impurities and micro exfoliates to refine appearance of skin.

Then, the pièce de la resistance – the nutrient-rich alginate masque. Please note before booking that this masque is really thick and covers both the eyes and the mouth; it’s  very strange sensation and one that doesn’t seem to suit everyone apparently as only small holes for the nostrils are left for breathing. This super thick glutenous textured masque is made up of all natural ingredients, including fresh water algi extract (algin) which obstructs transepidermal water loss to increase hydration in the skin. Ultrasound probes are then attached to the edges and they gently pulse electrical currents through the mask. These gentle currents are impalpable and really help to restore skin by penetrating the layers of epidermis and dermis much more effectively than a topical cream. This part of the treatment lasts for about 10 minutes but apparently it’s about 70 regular facials-worth of treatment, and so it’s a good time to just concentrate on breathing and meditation while environ works its magic.

To finish off, Lisa applied some vita peptide eye gel. And, according to Lisa, peptides are the business when it comes to eye wrinkles. The eye gel also contains argireline ( friendly botox ) as well as anti oxidants and Vitamins C & E. Again, this product is available in salon only and retails at £57.00 Finally, some Environ Sun Care RAD - a revolutionary SPF15 antioxidant sunscreen which protects from both UVA and UVB irradiation. It’s a combination of sun filters and reflectants to provide medical grade SPF15, while natural anti oxidant vitamins increase sun protection and assist in fighting against free radicals.

I upgraded my visit to include a full body massage as well and Lisa used the Eve Taylor London products, which are pre blended aromatherapy essential oils, totally balanced  for hydration.  After two hours lying down and a blast of vertigo the week before, I was very slightly dizzy getting up, but Lisa gentry propped me up and made me drink 500ml water before dressing slowly and heading on my way.

 I think I will have the sleep of my life tonight… And I look forward to looking in  the mirror tomorrow!

FACE | HYDRAFACIAL AT CATHEDRAL AESTHETICS - THE PERFECT KICK START TO SPRING

February comes from the Latin Februum, which has several meanings around the notions of cleansing, purification, renewal and regrowth. Our editor Cathy caught up with Jenn for a bit of a chit chat on how she got to where she is today.

What was your tipping point, getting you to actually turn The Cleanse Off Mitt into a business? 

I was a skin therapist in London and I had clients who were buying premium results-driven skincare but using face wipes to “cleanse” first so the fantastic skincare wasn’t able to properly penetrate into the skin and do its job. They may as well have been pouring half of the serum directly from the bottle onto their bathroom counter (and expecting skin results). 

I knew that there was a gap in the market for an accessible, affordable and skin-friendly alternative to face wipes so I created it and so the Cleanse Off Mitt® was born. 

#cleansewithme is the new #getreadywithme - but can you overcleanse?

Yes! Of course you can! I think it more has to do with what you’re using to cleanse than the amount of cleansing you're doing. I advocate for a double cleanse - remove your makeup and debris with your first step and then cleanse with something that is either soothing or pacifying the skin or delivering active ingredients after.

Overcleansing is when you are using too many skin-stripping ingredients, you’re using active cleansers too frequently (such as a cleanser with a high salicylic acid content twice a day) and you’re essentially damaging your skin’s barrier. 

Everyone wants to know about adult breakouts - are they caused by food, hormones or products? Or a mixture of all three?

They can be caused by any of these or combinations. I believe it is important to investigate the root of the concern, to figure out whether it’s stress that is causing your breakouts, whether it’s lifestyle, whether it’s products that no longer work for you or whether it’s an intolerance, for example. 

This is why we send all clients of the Nerd Network a skin diary to complete, to track whether they slept correctly and how much sugar they ate, for example, and see if these things correlate with their skin troubles. 

Skin from within - which supplements would you recommend for healthiest skin?

All of them. First and foremost, vitamin A in some shape or form so long as you are not pregnant or breastfeeding. Probiotics are something that everyone should take, as are omegas. Vitamin C is key for tackling pigmentation, boosting our collagen production and strengthening capillaries to aid with redness. If you’re looking for plump, youthful skin, collagen supplements like IMAGE’s Yana are the ticket. 

Is sugar the devil? Should we stay away from it for our skin - for our health in general? 

Unpopular opinion but yes, sugar should be avoided whenever possible. Sugar increases inflammation throughout the body (thus in the skin) and helps to form AGEs (advanced glycation end-products) which attack our collagen and elastin and age our skin faster. 

That being said, all in moderation. Every once in a while, it’s not the end of the world if you have some chocolate. If that same chocolate helps to reduce stress, then isn’t it having a positive effect on your skin nonetheless?!
